Rob wrote a new article for the front page taking a look at what Geo has done to date and taking a swing at what to expect in 2012.

Do him a favor and post some comments there!

He's brown so he must be lazy and decidedly non-gritty.

At what point can we stop with the "Non-white = lazy" stuff? I know it's a joke, it just seems to have gotten well over-played.

I agree. Tell all the Cubs fans and media to stop believing it already.

It is overdone, though.

does it discuss geo's marijuana habit and taco bell induced obesity?

This is as embarrassing as the cubs.com thread I started to promote the article. I realize we're being tongue in cheek here, but it doesn't reflect well that not a single post has been about the article or a serious one about Geo.

What is there to say about Geo? You summed it up. When he's good he's been pretty darn good, but he's inconsistent and for the that reason you can't really rely on his production to pick up the slack from others.

Given the paucity of catchers who can put up Geo's numbers and defense, the Cubs should only trade him if they think they can replace his production elsewhere. I would expect better than average production (for a catcher) from Geo.

The whole "lazy" latino thing might be overdone here, but within the casual fan base it is not. I was just talking to my dad earlier today and he said, "that Rameriz is the worst base runner I've ever seen, it's like he's lazy or something." I bit my tongue.

It's more than just bad luck via BABIP as you mentioned, he hit .308 off of FBs and about .140 off of everything else off-speed.

He's going to have to adjust a higher % of secondary pitches if that's the new book.

I really liked the excerpt you provided that convinced me I should read the article

I could definitely understand that if it was one of my articles...but Rob actually knows what he's talking about! :)

I'll try to be more verbose next time.

That's...not good. The idea of trading Geo has been gaining traction with me throughout the offseason. That insight does nothing to diminish the appeal of that idea.

He had a 25% decrease in contact with pitches outside the zone compared to the avg. batter and 20% lower overall contact ratio.

Now I wish I had been paying enough attention to see if it was explainable. That's not the kind of trend one wants to see in a hitter.

He was at a 43% contact ratio clip on pitches outside the zone, while the league was at 68%, I wish I knew how that changed by count to see if pitchers pitched him backwards or just went to breaking balls/off-speed when he was behind in the count.

Soto's O-Contact % has remained pretty constant through his career. In fact, 2010 was the only full season where it wasn't 45%(it was 48%).

What the numbers can't tell us is what changes in his approach (and I mean habits, stuff he was working on in the off-season, etc...) contributed to these fluctuating results, if they did at all - iirc, his breakout coincided with a visible loss of weight one off-season. Maybe Geo is one of those guys that could benefit from some professional help with his conditioning (and this statement is not an open invitation to continue the eating/ethnicity references, btw)

Maybe we need to get him to stop smoking so much pot. Lazy pothead is too lazy to get off his stoned ass and work out. I'm surprised he's had any success at all. This makes him the first person to ever smoke pot and have some success in life. Too bad the pot held him back from being great.

I'm stoned.
