The trib article this morning says Cutler suffered the injury on the interception return. Others say it was in the 2nd quarter. I guess I'm confused then.

Doesn't really matter. I hope Hanie is ready to hold down the fort. Not going to be easy.

I've stepped back from the ledge a bit. We should still make the playoffs, but even if Cutler comes back for the Wild Card game he will be quite rusty.

And I'm certainly not questioning his toughness, but if he played more than half the game with the injury why can't he continue to play and get surgery in the offseason?

The injury wasn't finished swelling most likely. Plus, depending on the type of injury, it's certainly possible that continued use of the thumb could make it worse.

i will point out that martz has had to replace his anointed savior quarterback before with an even more untested backup who was bagging groceries not long before he signed.

this time hanie has got a week to prepare and get comfortable with the receivers. he's already comfortable in the pocket, he's shown great poise under pressure in the playoffs, stepping up in the pocket and getting the ball downfield. he's also mobile enough to escape danger if need be.

Let's temper the Hanie to Kurt Waner comparisons. Maybe Hanie can be our 2005 Orton and he can do enough to allow our defense and special teams to beat Oakland, KC, Denver, Seattle and Minny.

i never compared warner and hanie. my point is that martz has had well-prepared backups ready to go in the past with warner and bulger both being discovered after injury.

Just showed on ESPN that Cutler hurt it EARLY IN THE SECOND QUARTER. So, clearly he played over 1/2 a game with it, and made some pretty major throws. The deep ball to Knox. The fastball to Davis for the TD. The corner route to Bennett on the sidelines. This is a weird situation.

What play was it? That's so odd because everyone else is saying it was on the int return and it kinda looks like it if you watch the replay. We're they reporting as fact or just speculating on when it might have occurred?

If that is when he injured it, I definitely makes me wonder why he can't play. He made some really nice throws in the 2nd half, which was his better and more accurate half of throwing the ball. I'm sure adrenaline helped mask the pain, but shouldn't be enough to overcome that sort of injury.

No didn't say it as a fact, but they showed him make a throw, get hit on his thumb and then look down and start flexing it.

I'm strangely at ease with this because the Bears have shown they are a solid team with a solid QB and because of that they should be able to stay relavent for a while. Plus I didn't have much more hope than simply getting to the playoffs this season. But my biggest concern is going to be all the nonsense that will come out talking about Cutler ending back to back seasons injured (unless, of course, he can come back) and the Bears still needing to find a QB.

Probably a combination of the two. That thumb got rocked pretty hard on the interception return, so if he did hurt it earlier that just sealed the deal.

Even the meatballs won't go with that, will they? It's not like he's dealing with chronic, nagging injuries. He came back from last season no problem and this is just his thumb. Are even the meatballs THAT dumb?

Big Ben of Steelers can play with a broken finger but Cutler can't. Toughen up Jay. Kristin will kiss it and make it better.

I'm sure some will. If this season goes down the tubes, they will harp on Cutler being fragile.

If he misses time and Hanie holds his own, they will talk about replacing him full time.

whatever happens, please don't go out and sign a veteran journeyman.

as much as I fear the drop-off from Cutler to Hanie, I fear this even more. I agree, Hanie knows the system and can play. We aren't going to win games on his arm, but the last thing I want is Todd Collin #2.

just ram Forte/Barber down ever ones throats and mix in a few play-action passes, roll outs, screens. The Defense is going to have to carry them a few games.

This is just far out of my scope of reasoning that it blows my mind; it's like the "he's soft" talk. The guy has had the absolute [expletive] kicked out of him since he's come here and all he's ended up with is a relatively minor knee injury, a concussion and a broken thumb (all while playing with diabetes) and there are people who think he's fragile? If he was actually fragile he'd have been crippled or dead a while ago.
