I would guess they give him a tour of Wrigley and have an informal gathering on the field with a few reporters and Theo. Or no press conference. I'd doubt he gets a normal one.

Has their been any word on what's going on with this? Could they be waiting to introduce him and Almora together in a press conference to get Cubs fans excited about the future, especially those who don't realise that there's a baseball world beyond the 25 guys on the active roster?

They are introducing Anthony Rizzo tomorrow at the game. Not sure they need to wait to introduce Soler and Almora to get Cubs fans "excited" about the future.

I'm sure they are finalizing things, going through physicals, getting a visa, etc. I'm sure that as soon as all those details are worked out that the signing will be announced and he'll be assigned to a team. They're not going to wait to get him started just to announce it with Almora.

Is extended spring training like a season long thing that is basically equivalent to a lower level than Boise, or does it end (or has it already) at some point during the year. If it's still going on, I'd imagine they'd send Soler there to get his feet wet first, right?

Excuse the stupid question, it's my first year paying much attention to the minors.

Extended spring training ends the week before Boise and the AZL season starts but there are still enough fields and coaches down at Fitch for players to get coaching and side sessions in. Extended spring training is basically a set up for Boise and AZL players to get extra coaching and playing experience before their short season leagues start.

There can still be players at the complex rehabbing/working, but the extended spring training games end before Arizona/Boise start. He could be sent to Arizona which is a lower level than Boise, but they're formal games, unlike extended spring where you can bat a player leadoff every single inning if you want to.

Wells was designated to free up a roster spot. Soler signing in next few days.

Hopefully they can get him to Arizona/Boise/Peoria

Puig signing is official already, hard to believe that got completely done before we've got Soler finished up. We only have until Monday, there better not be any snags.

#Cubs expected to announce Jorge Soler signing today

yay. I'm assuming he'll start in the AZL, but hopefully he gets most of his AB in Boise this year.

Roto Official =D>

Cubs signed OF Jorge Soler to a nine-year, $30 million contract.

The deal was finalized Saturday after the Cubs won the bidding for Soler earlier this month. The 20-year-old Cuban defector is expected to begin his career at right field in the minors, but has the potential to play all three outfield spots. Under the new CBA, international signings after Sunday can only be for a maximum of $2.9 million.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Jorge Soler have agreed to terms on a nine-year major league contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Soler, 20, joins the Cubs organization after playing for Cuba at several international tournaments, including the 16-under COPABE Pan American Championships in Mexico in 2008 and the World Junior Championships in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada in 2010.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Soler was one of the team’s offensive leaders in 2010, batting .304 with a .500 on-base percentage and .522 slugging percentage in seven games, helping Cuba to the World Junior Championships bronze medal. He drew nine walks and only had one strikeout during the tournament.

Soler bats and throws right-handed.

Chicago’s 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.

Nice! I really want to see Soler either batting either before or after either Candelario or Baez at least a handful of games this year. I'd guess Boise is most likely.

I'd guess Boise is most likely, but I'm really hoping the Cubs feel he's ready for Peoria.

We might have a chance to see Almora/Candelario/Soler in Boise some time in August.

Yep, that part was a given. The interesting part will be where he goes from there.

I'm currious as to what that means really. Will he just start getting into Arizona league games right away or will he be on some B field somewhere taking live batting practice for a week? I guess Arizona Phil should have an eye on things and have a report on TCR before to long. If he doesn't show up in box scores fairly quickly that is.

My guess would be a few days on the fields to get acclimated, followed by getting into games for a few days. Then he'll get his actual assignment.
