Does the whole not yet ruled a free agent business mean that it could be quite some time before Soler signs with anyone?

Oh yeah. No clue when he even becomes available. Same for the rest of the 30ish Cubans waiting to be signed as well. I guess they'll just trickle in at different points. The Yankees signed a guy yesterday for instance. They all have different timetables and my guess is we'll hear when Soler and maybe Rivero and Luis are cleared, but not the rest.

At one point I recall hearing that Soler has until July to sign before becoming subject to the new IFA rules.

Yes.

I would imagine that us hearing of this news means that Soler will likely be a free agent soon. Everything we heard suggested he was a few weeks behind Cespedes.

Probably as good as any. All we really know about Soler is he's 6'3, 205, has good speed for now, that probably turns into averagish once he fills out, has solid power potential and an arm that profiles for RF, with better plate discipline than Cespedes, although he struggles with breaking stuff inside the zone. Kind of scary, but it's like having Heyward or Bubba Starling on the open market and seeing what they'd bring. He'd become our top prospect immediately and won't have to be rushed, like Cespedes will.

This is why he is ours. This is why Theo and Jed are all over this kid. This is exactly what we need in our system right now. All he costs is money, and we have the ability to blow down the doors before the new rules take effect.

Soler is a Cub. I am actually remarkably comfortable calling it now with 100% certainty. Get mad all you want at me typing that, whatever. Get ready for the excitement ya'll. Jorge Soler is a Chicago Cub!

Yesterday. Oh boy. I can't help but get all worked up seeing Soler mentioned with Heyward and Starling. Baseball is about to start, and I am a bit jacked with enthusiasm.

Anything concrete leading you to believe this or just liquer induced giddiness?

Any idea what level he would start at in 2012?

In the Cubs system, probably Peoria (along with fellow Cuban defector Gerardo Concepcion) with a slight chance at Daytona.

Anybody see this?

When the winter began, there were three major Cubans who could become free agents, and the Chicago Cubs could land two of them.

According to reports from the Dominican Republic, the Cubs soon could sign 19-year-old outfielder Jorge Soler after earlier getting 19-year-old pitcher Gerardo Concepcion.

I like it, but I think it's just based off the same information already out there, the Cubs making very strong play for him story. It even still has Cespedes as likely to sign with the Marlins.

That's just recycled info from van Dyck, who's probably never broken a Cubs story in his life. At least, with this news though, hopefully he's available very soon and we DO sign him. That said, I'm really not liking the fact that we're considered the "favorites", because it seems like that doesn't work out to well anymore.

The mystery team has done very well for itself this winter.

I'm not so sure it's rehashed. The article posted tonight claims word out of the Dominican is the Cubs have signed Soler for about $27.M over 3 or 4 years. The Suntimes also posted a rare evening Cubs article citing Miami sources with a similar dollar value.

Tribune Soler, according to one report, will be making $27.5 million with the Cubs for three or four years. He may have been courted by Cubs ownership and front-office officials while they were visiting their new Dominican academy earlier this month.

Suntimes A recent report from Miami cited sources saying the Cubs were willing to make a multiyear offer worth $27.5 million for Soler.

Can that be right? Why would they sign a guy who is an A ball player right now to a contract that, at best, when it ends he will be just about big league ready?
