Bruce Chen Weighing Multiyear Offers

By Tim Dierkes [November 16 at 9:39am CST]

Lefty Bruce Chen has multiyear offers, tweets SI's Jon Heyman. He says the Royals and Cubs are among the teams talking to Chen, with the Royals perhaps focused on him.

Chen, a 34-year-old Scott Boras client, has never had a multiyear deal in his career. This year for the Royals he posted a 3.77 ERA, 5.6 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 1.05 HR/9, and 34.6% groundball rate in 155 innings

A multi-year offer? I might give him a NRI.

More than I'd give him. Chen is a serviceable starter, but not something we need. We need a front end starter. We have enough back end options if need be.

Yeah I'd shoot him instead

I think Bruce Chen would be a solid pick-up. He's really not that bad.

Theo has already mentioned that starting pitching depth will be a focus so signings like Bruce Chen this off season shouldn't be that surprising.

I'm trying to figure out how Bruce Chen manages to hold his own as a MLB pitcher. He strikes out too few, walks too many and gives up HRs at a decent rate. He's not a GB pitcher and his fastball sucks.

Homeless man's Mark Buehrle?

Signing pitching depth is pretty expected, but targeting Chen specifically surprises me quite a bit. There's nothing in Chen's resume that makes me think he'll be any better than a mediocre pitcher going forward and certainly not worth a multiyear deal.

Not a fan of this if the rumor is true.

How did all those back-end options work out this past year?

(Not that I want Chen.)
