As Cubs fans, Matheny is about the best you can hope for. It's borderline impossible to tell what any candidate without managerial experience will be like at the MLB level, but Matheny's lack of any coaching experience at all means there's an increased risk he's way in over his head.

LOL. This is almost as funny as the Ventura hiring. They can kiss Pujols goodbye. All they had to do was promote Oqendo to keep Albert. And raise his offer a little bit. They aren't raising his offer by a single penny, and then they hire Mike Matheny as manager!? Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

Matheny and Pujols wee teammates for 4 years, I'm sure they're friendly with one another and his hiring has no affect on whether or not he wants to return

AND raise his offer a little bit ($50-100 million being a little bit)

I hope some team signs Oquendo as manager next year so Albert isn't forced to retire.

It does kind of make me wonder what is wrong with Oquendo and whether he will stick around. I would think he probably will, but it certainly seems like a slight to hire someone with absolutely no experience over a guy who has been paying his dues for many years.

It sounds like the Cards brass has serious doubts on how Oquendo would handle the media side of things. Just the rabble on local sports talk radio here and there, but that's something I've been hearing pretty regularly.

i was actually fairly confident they would hire ryne sandberg, thought the matheny thing seemed so out of left field that he would be a favorite.

[answering a twitterer who sarcastically said that hiring a manager with no experience would make Pujols "thrilled"]: Believe it or not, I suspect he is. He's a BIG Matheny fan.

Albert loves Matheny. The two are going to Santo Domingo later. Albert has said he considers Matheny his "mentor in Christ".

I think, however, that the Benjamins will have more to do with Albert re-signing in St Louis than who is managing. Suffice it to say Matheny doesn't hurt...especially since the Cards will have a couple extra million to throw at Pujols.

Eckstein's suggestion that Albert would sign if Oquendo were manager is from out in left field.

So, does this make Francona more or less likely to become a Cub?

The only way the Cardinals managerial search would affect the possibility of Terry Francona coming to the Cubs would be if the Cardinals hired him.

what if mozeliak shot francona and murdered him during an interview?
