What's this up to nowadays, anyway?

i don't know, but i'll bet we're getting awfully close to tom being able to make payroll out of what he's got in his wallet at any given time.

Soto comes at at $4.3, that's 0.7 million less than arbitration estimates. Lemem see

Let's see if I can get this right

Nine players under MLB contract:

Ryan Dempster - 14.0

Carlos Marmol - 7.0

Alfonso Soriano - 19.0

Marlon Byrd - 6.5

David DeJesus - 4.3

Reed Johnson - 1.15

Geovany Soto - 4.3

Paul Maholm - 4.75 (including 500k in very reachable incentives)

Current contracts of $61.00 million.

Arbitration eligibles:

Matt Garza - 8.0 (6.0 2011 2nd year arb eligible)

Randy Wells - 1.0 (0.5 2011 1st yr arb eligible)

Jeff Baker - 2.0 (1.2 2011 3rd year arb eligible)

Blake DeWitt - 0.8 (0.5 2011 1st yr arb eligible)

Ian Stewart - 2.5 (2.3 2011 1st yr arb eligible - was super 2 last year?)

Chris Volstad - 2.0 (0.5 2011 2nd year arb eligible)

Arbitration estimates total: 16.3 million

Non-roster expenses:

16.5 million to the Marlins for Carlos Zambrano

5 million deferred to Carlos Pena

Non-roster total: $21.5 million

That's a total of $98.8 million for 15 players. Fill out the rest of the roster at an average of $475k and you've got an estimated running total of....

$103.55 million

Posted

Dempster is $15.5 because of a contract restructuring.

Samardzija is a lot more than $0.475. $2.7-ish.

Don't forget Kerry Wood at $3.

Cubs paid Carlos Silva $2 this offseason. Not sure if you want to count that.

Blake Dewitt - 1.1

Current contracts of $75.532 million.

Arbitration eligibles:

Matt Garza - 8.0 (6.0 2011 2nd year arb eligible)

Jeff Samardzija - 2.7

Arbitration estimates total: 10.7 million

Non-roster expenses:

16.45 million to the Marlins for Carlos Zambrano

(Cots does not have Pena's 5 mil on Cubs 2012 payroll obligations)

Non-roster total: $16.45 million

That's a total of $102.682 million for 16 players (including Zambrano $$$ to Marlins). Fill out the rest of the roster at an average of $475k and you've got an estimated running total of....

$106.957 million

I updated the post above and it should be VERY close at the moment... I checked on Cot's to make sure these numbers were right.

Didn't know where else to put this, but found this to be interesting (and refreshing)...

Newsday’s Ken Davidoff adds up teams’ payroll commitments for 2015 and beyond and finds that nine clubs -- the Orioles, Cubs, Indians, Astros, Royals, Mets, Padres, Giants and Mariners -- haven’t committed a thing for ’15 or beyond.

well i'm not sure it's totally refreshing. almost all of those teams are bad and have very few players worth making a long-term commitment to.

It's mind boggling that people view this sort of thing as refreshing.

Yeah, those aren't exactly a lot of great teams listed there.

Yay, the Cubs don't have any players with long term value!

What's mind boggling about it? The Cubs stink. I'm happy we don't have any of those players locked up long term. It's a clean slate and a fresh start.

What is so refreshing about the Cubs stinking? The reason they don't have any longterm contracts is because their players stink. I would love to have good players signed through 2015 and beyond.

People have a perverse desire to have no high paid players or longterm contracts on the team but the only teams built like that suck. It's mind boggling that somebody would find it refreshing to be like all the crappy small market teams.

The Cubs have stunk my entire life, with a couple of fluke seasons mixed in here and there. I'm not against locking up star players long term, I'm just happy we don't have any of our current "stars" locked up long term. We are starting fresh with nothing to hold us back, and unlike the small market teams, we will have the money to buy their stars when they can't afford them.

I get that people are going to be glad to see the Soriano contract expire, and from that standpoint it's nice to not have any overpaid guys that we have to deal with for years on end.

And saying you're glad we don't have any of our medicore guys locked up long term is fine, but by being glad you don't have long term contracts in place really just means you're glad that we don't have good players....and I don't think any of us are glad about that.

I agree.

Nonsense.

How many times have we been in the playoff hunt in consecutive years?

Multiple times in the past 15 years. 1998 was moderately fluky, but they were good because they had some really good well compensated players. You should want that. You have to pay to play in this league and all this obsessive "don't sign anybody" nonsense infesting everything Cub this year is just stupid. We should be salivating for the next big contract player to come aboard, not rejoicing that none exist.

I agree. When Vlad hit free agency, we were sitting there with an old and expensive Alou. I'm happy we aren't in that situation any longer, not that we don't have any good players locked up long term.

Having good players under long-term contract > having payroll flexibility > having mediocre or bad players signed to long-term contracts.

We're making a transition from No. 3 to No. 2, and people are happy about that. That doesn't mean nobody wants to be in the first one.
