It's not like this was our last chance to trade him, guys. There's still a waiver deal (unlikely), but also the winter meetings this offseason.

Remember: We have a competent front office now from top to bottom. Everything is going to work out. Breathe.

I could see us trading him in the offseason. More teams should be interested (non-contending teams this year especially) and I'm guessing Theo/Hoyer just didn't get overwhelmed with anything and would rather wait this out.

@Ken_Rosenthal

#Diamondbacks did NOT make the big deal they were working on. Still trying to find out what it was.

As someone noted somewhere earlier, I'd bet it was King Felix

Rosenthal says it was Dempster.

Ken Rosenthal and myself have a differing opinon on what "big deal" means then.

rosenthal was saying that the rangers had heavy interest in garza too but were ultimately scared off by the injury.

we'll never know so it's pointless to think about, but it would suck if that little tricep cramp cost us some monster deal for olt or something.

Jed's comments about teams being scared off by Garza's injury were very telling though. There were no " we need more Matt Garza's than less of him lines". Pretty obvious the plan was to trade him. My guess is that stays the intention, assuming he pitches decently the rest of the year. I guess the competition on the trade market will include Shields and Johnson, but I can't really think of who else could be available.

It'll be interesting to see what their plan is for the rotation if they are planning on moving Garza.

My guess is the headliner is going to be a guy they can slot immediately into the rotation next year. Maybe Hutchison, maybe Odorizzi, but I figure the pricetag drops from 3 really solid guys down to 2. Maybe an amped up Marshall type deal, better guys than Wood and Torreyes, with a 3rd contributing piece again. Olney said Arizona was trying today on him, if they were offering Bradley and Corbin as the top 2 pieces, I'd be pretty disappointed we didn't take it.

Wait what? I've been busy all day. Was there a legitimate rumor that Archie Bradley was offered? I'd take the gamble on Bradley and scrubs for Garza, but Bradley/Corbin would've been a knockout package that I doubt could be duplicated.

General thought is that it is what it is. The injury was a factor, and keeping him and seeing if he can rebound, rather than selling him on the cheap, made sense (provided that above Bradley rumor wasn't true ... that's a heck of a deal).

I expect Garza moved this winter, and in all honesty, 2013 feels like it's going to be a crap year (hard to see them dealing Garza and making a play for a big FA pitcher). At least, they are following this "process" in the right way, rather than how Boston is now burdened with bad deals, but two bad years is going to really suck (outside of a chance of getting Rodon).

if we're not getting a high ceiling guy who is close to major league ready, i wouldn't accept it.

Really, so a package centered around Bradley was offered from Arizona, you would say no simply because he is a little ways away? Garza isn't anywhere close to the stud this board has made him out to be at times. To land Bradley would be a coup.

I can see the logic behind saying no to an arm (albeit an extremely talented arm) who is still in the MWL. That's a long distance to the big leagues and a lot of potential injuries along the way.

If you sell guys for prospects that are 3+ years away, that's typically a good way to hemorrhage the value of the guy you are trading. Archie Bradley is walking nearly 6 batters per 9 in Low A. He's undoubtedly talented and I would certainly like him in our system, but a HS pitcher with huge control problems is a huge risk to flame out, no matter how undeniable the stuff. For that reason, there'd need to be additional players of importance closer to MLB ready included.

I think one high ceiling, major league ready guy and one more low level high ceiling guy is a must.

Slightly better Randy Wells imo

Something I've never been totally clear on: Waivers in August. Hypothetical here, tell me if I'm wrong. We attempt to pass Garza through. Multiple teams claim him. We then have the opportunity to trade him to the team with the worst record that claimed him, correct? And he has to pass through the AL before he passes through the NL, right? As far as players go, anyone we conceivably would trade for, would then ALSO have to pass through, if they're on the 40 man, right? Also, isn't there a rule you can only attempt to get a guy through but so many times? I'm asking this, because if I've got it right, a team like Toronto could actually be one of the first teams that may actually put in a claim, making it possible to still deal him during the season.

Pretty sure it's same league first, but it sounds right otherwise.

If they package him with Vitters or Jackson, they should get grreat value. After their stare down with Colletti I have more faith than ever in Theo and Jed.
