Heis not yet arb-eligible. Still under club control.

so, does this mean that shark basically has to sign whatever contract offer the cubs give him, or sit out the year? is there a minimum value the contract has to have?

They can only cut his salary by 20% of his previous years salary from what I understand.

D'oh, I'd been listing him as arb-eligible if they declined, but I thought he had way more major league service time than he did. Just barely over 2 years.

They have to give him 80% of what he made last year, which was $3.3 million. So instead of a $3 million option, they can sign him for $2.64 million.

Is that the case even though he's not arb-eligible?

According to this, yes:

There would be interest at 3M.

At the end of last year, he was showing three quality pitches: fastball, slider and split. It could be argued as four pitches if you want to separate the two and four seam fastballs. There's a really good chance that the Cubs will try him as a starter this spring and he's got a pretty good chance of beating out Wells even if we get another starter.

Wut. What is your source for this "try him as a starter" noise?

I've seen it in a couple of places that he's been told to prep over the winter to try out as a starter this spring.

As I think through it, I believe it's all been through email with various people, though. Pretty reliable people, though.

Why doesn't Hoops lift his NSBB embargo?

Starting him is probably a mistake. He stuff has been playing way up in relief, while he was very hittable as a starter.

I love this. Probably the first difference brtween the Theo regime and Hendry. Saving 600,000 by doing this is the right thing to do. I honestly think Jim would have just gave him his option, not really caring about the small amount of cash that could be used elsewhere.

It's less than 400,000 and if they try him as a starter and he succeeds, then they may be regretting tearing up the 3.5 million option for 2013 (I don't know how successful as I'm not sure how his current salary being so high factors into a first year arbitration hearing). One of those moves that's pretty close either way though, and if they leave him as a reliever it's definitely the right move.

Agreed. Hendry did a lot of that type of thing - while thinking that he was making inroads with his and other players. Many of whom were just happy to take the money.

That's pretty awesome. I hadn't even considered it lately. Could be a very high reward to that little risk.

The "we can contend" crowd will disagree vehemently, but I'd like to see both Samardzija and Cashner in the rotation to start the year, with McNutt on deck.

Let's see if we can get one or both of these guys to stick in their most highly-valued role.

I totally agree with you, actually.

I want us to get a number two starter, have samardzija win the fifth starter job and have cashner build arm strength in Iowa.

I want Cashner in the rotation as much as anyone on this board, but I actually hope he's in the pen next year, then given another shot in 2013. Too worried about his arm falling off, due to too many innings next year.

Cashner can build arm strength *and* gain more bigleague experience pitching in Chicago.

I suppose you can make a service time argument for having him in Iowa, though.

Much greater control over his innings in Iowa.

Disagree. He hasn't started in a few years and he's improved as a pitcher since then.
