Pirates Will Decline Option For Paul Maholm

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [October 12 at 2:52pm CST]

The Pirates have decided to decline their 2012 option for Paul Maholm, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The left-hander would have cost $9.75MM in 2012.

I know he hasn't exactly lived up to his expectations, but this year he was looking like he was going to have a breakout before he got hurt. This being said, I want him if the price is reasonable. Definitely over any non CJ Wilson FA starter.

I'm guessing they know something about his health? Otherwise he'd be an easily tradeable asset.

I don't know how easily tradeable he is, he would make almost $10m this and has a career ERA+ of 96 and WHIP of 1.424. I think this is more the case of a team with a $40m payroll not wanting to spend 1/4 of it on a pitcher who isn't that good. That being said I think the Cubs should show some interest and would be fine bringing him on for the right price.

I'd bet Maholm makes at least 10M AAV on the contract he signs, and that'll be a multi-year commitment as opposed to having the reduced risk of 1 year.

All I know is a Pirates fan I know said there was an assumption all year that they wouldn't pick up his option for financial reasons.

At the right price, I'd be interested, but I doubt he would come cheap, and thus, I'd be hesitant. He's a mid-end of the rotation starter, a Randy Wells-level guy (who, like Randy did, somewhat overachieved). Anything above a 7/8 mil AAV, I'd be wary of handing a contract to him (particularly since it would take probably at least 2 years, if not 3). As someone noted above, he might get 10 mil AAV on the market, and I'd definitely pass at that rate.

It's a sad state of affairs when a guy with a career 96 ERA+ could get $10 million in the FA market

I don't know if he actually will, but it's not impossible when you consider some of the factors out there (namely, weak FA pitching class).

In an ideal world, he wouldn't get paid much more than Randy Wells next year. Basically the same level of pitching talent.

Hasn't this pretty much been happening since Eric Milton with Cinci? I think he got 8 or 9, but he wasn't all that good and loved to give up HRs.

Fun fact: Back when Triple Play was around Eric Milton was pretty nasty in that game. Then again so was Dave Burba...
