This was brought up in the Theo thread and I think it deserves it's own thread personally. When asking this, I also mean take into account what the player's situations are contractually, along with how they're producing.

Here's my list of hitters I don't want to see dealt away right now

Castro

Soto

Soriano(because of how much it'd probably cost to move him obviously)

Campana

Colvin(if he even makes the team)

LeMahieu

I don't see Aramis returning and if it was on a 3-4 year deal, I'm not thinking I'd want him anyway. If we decide not to go after one of the big boys at 1b, then Pena is solid enough to have back, on another 1 year deal. Byrd is totally tradeable and hope we look into what he's worth to soneone else. If Barney could net us something decent, I'd move him. But, if we suddenly look at him as a backup and not as a starter, then I'm throwing him on the keeper list. Baker and DeWitt? Don't really care one way or the other honestly. Would probably rather LeMahieu and Flaherty show enough to make them expendable, but keeping one may be necessary.

Pitchers are as follows

Garza

Cashner

Samardzija

Russell

Wood

Marmol(needs to rebound)

Did NOT forget Marshall either. Think he'll be gone or overpaid by the time we're truly contending and we could get a ransom for him as well. I just don't think of Randy Wells as anything more than average and now that he's entering his arb years, his value goes away, if you ask me. Dempster is probably necessary to have around, but if we're out of it, I hope he's dealt, because again, I don't trust him heading into his upper 30's. If Z is dealt away and we can save some money off his deal and put it back into the system, then I'm fine with that scenario.

Kind of rushed through this, didn't include any minor leaguers at all, but can get in depth later, if necessary.

The only guys I really want to see gone are both gone anyway. Pena, not that I didn't like him, but because we need an upgrade and Grabow and Hill because they're bad.

The only guys I'd be upset if we lost are Castro, Garza, Cashner, and Marshall. I'm on the fence with Soto.

I'm rather indifferent on the rest. I'd like to keep Ramirez, but not for too much money.

I pretty much agree with the original list with the exception that I'd like to see ARam brought back on a 2 year deal with a 3rd year option (mutual?, team?, vesting based on games played?) if it's financially feasible. Who knows what Ricketts will give Theo the leeway to do?

Don't trade unless Mike Rizzo gets drunk and offers you Strasburg, Harper, and Rendon for him: Castro

No reason for them not to be on the roster unless something significant changes: Soto, Barney, Jackson, Garza, Marshall, Russell

Their contract might make sense for them to be dealt, but I'd like to see them on the roster: Byrd, Marmol, Dempster, Samardzija

Huge contracts who I don't mind keeping but would be eager to pay at least some money to unload: Zambrano, Soriano

Team controlled players who should be on the roster in some fashion: Cashner, Wells, Colvin?

Team controlled guys who may or may not have a roster spot depending on how things shake out: DeWitt, Baker, Flaherty, LeMahieu, Campana

FA's I'd like to see come back as long as the finances work: Ramirez, Wood

FA's I don't want to see on the team next year: Pena, Johnson, Lopez, Ortiz, Grabow

GO AWAY LAHAIR: Lahair

Team controlled guys on the Iowa Shuttle: Everyone else

I think that covers everyone.

Just out of curiosity, why is Cashner on the lower priority list than Barney and Russell?

Based on those descriptions, I wouldn't really read too much into the order in terms of priority.

I'm assuming Cashner is in a different group because TT doesn't want him pitching a full 180 innings in the majors next year.

In hindsight, Cashner probably belongs in that group, I was more trying to articulate that Cashner and Wells probably have a significant role, but the pitching staff is fluid enough that one or both of them could end up in the pen or traded. That probably applies to Wells more than Cashner though, so he'd fit more with that second group.

Byrd, Soriano, Lopez, Grabow, Hill, Coleman, DeWitt should all be gone IMO. I'm on the fence regarding Soto, Dempster and Wells -- if a good offer comes my way I'd deal them.

Why should Byrd be gone?

Why not?

Because he's not expensive, he's a league-average player, there's nobody waiting at the gates internally to take his roster spot, and he's not here long-term anyway?

What's the upside to keeping him, though?

I couldn't care less either way whether he was traded in a Jose Ceda type deal or he stuck around.

He can have a roster spot and a starting job with Byrd still here. There are worse players who can lose theirs first.

Which side of this are you on? In favor of keeping Byrd or trading him?

One less roster spot to have to fill, basically. Jackson and Byrd can play CF/RF without hindering Jackson's progress if he's ready. The Cubs already need to find a SP or two and a quality 1B (and likely a 3B).

In favor of pointing out flawed arguments.

And indifferent on Byrd staying. If they can trade him for something like an even slightly valuable minor leaguer, go ahead.
