I actually hate to argue and haven't argued in this thread once. Just gave my opinions is all. And trying to control what a mess this thread has become. I'm all for silly threads but this is getting tiresome.

I didn't realize you were a mod.

If all the information that has come out during this is correct (highly suspect, of course), the Red Sox owe Theo Epstein a $3.5 million conclusion bonus when he leaves the team, and that goes up to $5 million if he finishes his contract in 2012. He has a salary for 2012 of $1.5 million.

Right now, the Cubs are offering to pay the conclusion bonus. So if the Red Sox choose to keep Epstein for a year against his will, they pay $6.5 million for that privilege.

They paid $51M to hang with Dice-K and his agent. I don't think the money would even make them blink.

They are still a cost:benefit analysis organization. What Cubs prospects are worth $6.5 million?

I can't blame the guy Diaz is so freaking hot.

Nope

I love how you scour to find the worst possible picture of anyone that someone says is hot. News Flash! Not everyone takes good pictures 24/7.

Option A:

-Let your GM that doesn't want to be here anymore take a promotion on a club in the other league

-Get compensation for it in the form of a decent prospect

-Save $3.5 million this year

-Hire your assistant GM who has mentored under Theo and groomed for the job to take the job.

Option B:

-Force your GM that doesnt want to be there anymore to not take a significant promotion and force him to stay for the last year of his contract

-Pay him $3.5 million this year to be a lame duck GM and disgruntled

-Get no compensation when he leaves next year

-Watch your assistant GM that was supposed to take over for Theo if/when he ever leaves bolt to a division rival (Baltimore)

Yeah it sounds like Boston has a lot of leverage to demand Brett Jackson instead of Josh Vitters and has a lot of incentive to force Theo to stay in Boston.

Angers me that this is even up for debate

It's just idle speculation from people who enjoy the drama.

The reality is a lot less extreme. Either the Red Sox are posturing or the real negotiations are about poaching staff.

SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman

Sounds like theo may take 1 or 2 from bosox f. office/medical staff. But that may affect compensation package (minor leaguers)

Sounds like Jon's sources are other newspaper articles.

Vinestal needs to twitter-heckle him some more.

I stoped following him but I follow these bastards that keep retweeting him. I hate Heyman, he said there was only a 25% chance Theo would come to the Cubs. So I'm guessing his info is only about 25% right. In all honesty though our only really good prospects are in the low minors anyway so there's really not all that much to take from us. I'm not really high on Vitters or Jackson, neither are likely to be stars. The guys that hold the most hope I think are from this past years draft and international signings. I don't think this past years draftees are illegible to be traded yet, isn't there a certain amount of time after the draft that guys can't be traded? They can honestly take their pick from AA and AAA as far as Im concerned.

I think you're confused. They're not choosing between Cubs prospects and $6.5M dollars. They're going to end up with both or neither.

You first.

I'm not pretending.

Then that's depressing. You are like this normally?

That's not Cameron Diaz. That's A-Rod's current girlfriend (who, again, isn't Diaz)

It seems a bit odd that these staff members are in essence being traded. I wonder if anyone stopped to ask them if they would join the Cubs if Theo asked. They could say, "no thanks, I like it here".

I can't imagine that there aren't franchises watching this occur. I wonder if this event will become the standard for front office people moving from one franchise to other in the future. This has the potential to come back and bite the Red Sox in the behind in the future.

If they are holding out for some Cubs prospect and walk because they don't get him, they have to pay the lame duck GM for another year and pay his conclusion bonus (an even higher one, actually) when he walks.

Exactly.

The Sox are going to walk away keeping their money AND having Cub prospects (if they "win" the negotiations), or they're going to walk away owing the money and no prospects (if they walk away).

It's not an either-or. It's a both-or-neither.

I'm sure it's only the people that want to come with Theo. I'm sure there're some staff members who would prefer to stay put. It's much easier for Theo to leave his home town when he's making 3-4 mil a year. But of course that's all behind the scenes stuff we'll probably never know.

BOSTON -- Negotiations continued Friday between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs for Theo Epstein's services, with the Red Sox taking a hard-line stance that their outgoing general manager will not be able to take any of his top aides with him, according to a team source.

The source told ESPNBoston.com Friday that he would not be surprised if negotiations continue until Tuesday.

Kyle is saying that if they play hardball in hopes of landing some prospect of ours to the point that we walk away, they are screwing themselves out of $6.5M because they held out for said prospect.

And what I'm wondering is, did they circulate a survey around the office?

"Would you like to go with Theo to Chicago?"

__ Yes

__ No

Which is why you know it's an idle threat.

They are threatening to pay the money and get nothing in order to try to leverage out a slightly better prospect. "If you don't give us what we want, we'll take nothing and waste $6.5 million." There's no Cubs prospect that's worth making that threat over, so you know it's not legit.
