The Red Sox seem to be balking at allowing top aides to come over with Epstein but arent most front office jobs 1 to 2 year contracts. Im sure they are more loyal to Theo then the Red Sox ownership. Should we expect alot of these front office guys to be on the Cubs staff in a year or two?

Sure they do. And the more Henry opens his mouth the less leverage the Sox have. I can't imagine Theo going back and finishing out his last year after the Red Sox ownership and president have thrown people under the bus. Actually, I'd laugh if the Cubs pulled back and said we'll wait until next year to hire Theo. How much would that really set this franchise back?

What if they win the WS and Theo decides to stay or next year other teams are looking for a GM and pay more money for his services. Get it done now.

What if? There is no way that Theo is going back to the Red Sox front office. If this deal breaks down, the Sox will pay Theo to sit the year out. They have publicly expressed a lack of trust in his judgement with the latest Henry interview.

As far as other teams go. They had the same opportunity to request an interview this offseason and no one did. I'd take my chances that Theo would be willing to sign a deal that he thought was acceptable this offseason.

How about Geo Soto too?

Hm... no thanks?

He's 29 years old and he isn't good behind the plate or at the plate. He hit .202 with RISP last year in 114 at-bats.

Why do you believe he isn't good behind the plate? Is it because that is the only reason you can justify Koye Hill being played? He didn't hit well in any situation last year

FTH?

This Soto tangent is very, very un-Theo.

Theo would drool over his .393 OBP in 2010.

Someone should Photoshop a Red Sox hat on Darwin Barney.

I missed this nonsense here for a little while. It's good to have stupid statements made to balance out the genius that is going to be Chicago Cubs baseball.

He has the 7th highest WAR among catches between 2008-2011. I am find with that for my starting catcher. Not a great year last year and rather inconsistent but still a solid catcher. Oh and he's improved behind the plate.

Geo had a very, very good 2008 and a very good 2010 and a very bad 2009 and a bad 2011. He's the definition of inconsistent. And as I said, he's 29. He doesn't have that much more room to improve.

Things change in a year and GM's get fired. You don't know what will happen next year.

More from that Henry interview:

Henry ducked the question on Theo Epstein. But did say. "I would have loved for Theo to be our GM for the next 20 years. ... I did everything I could personally to make that happen." He said Theo has permission to speak to "another team" and basically said he wouldn't be back.

Koyie Hill is the backup catcher so he MUST be awesome at defense, right?

No but he calls a better game than Geo. But as I said, he is so worthless at offense that he doesn't deserve to wear a Major League uniform.

i could live with castillo playing every day. but soto is a nice piece i'd rather have for actually trading for prospects.

What prospects do you think you can get for a 29 year old inconsistent catcher?

Who is out there that would be better? Seriously, I have no idea what catching free agents are available.

So you're saying...he's due.

He's due for a good year according to that. Why not sell him while his value is high. His value might not be lower than right now.

That said, we can still get Theo from Boston for less than Geo.

What if he has a good year next year? Why get rid of him now at his lowest value. We don't have anyone better and he's not completely worthless.

Sir, you're not off to a good start here.

My CubsGM-sense is starting to tingle...

What was the last incarnation again that did nothing but post images?

To be honest, I'm at the point where I really think it's a done deal and the only question is how much we end up giving up. The main advantage they hold is that they have a much better guy on their end of the negotiations than we do. I'd have no problem giving them Baker, a solid prospect, be it big league ready ( J Jax, Carpenter, Flaherty) or lower level ( Lake, Watkins, Beeler) and kick in. 2-3 mil. Might sound like a lot, but remember if Hendry were still here, he would have spent that 2-3 mil on another John Grabow anyway.

If you were Boston would you settle for that?

Absolutely. The relationships clearly sour. If it doesn't end here, it ends next year. His prodigy is already in place, and you can get 2 useful players and some cash or nothing at all and one year of a GM clashing with ownership.

from another board:

From people.

Theo agreed to not take anyone to Chicago with him.

Cubs and BoSox agree to let Theo go for some prospects similar to Players to be named later.

Theo agrees to deal with Cubs.

Theo sees BoSox now trying to squeeze cubs for more prospects. In Theo's view, more than what was agreed upon. Seeing they are going to be his prospects, Theo feels BoSox, no longer honoring the spirit of the deal.

Theo goes back to his deal and starts naming guys he wants to take to Chicago. He has no real intentions of doing so, but now he has something to negotiate with. Says he will drop those demands if a deal is done.

I like the cut of the jib! This is called DEALMAKING 101, a class Jim Hendry never took!
