A healthy Maholm could be that MOR guy.

More likely, I think, next year Dempster will be that MOR type guy (if he's back) and we'll be looking for somebody to pair with Garza as a TOR type guy. I'm not a big Maholm fan anyway, and tend to doubt he'll be pitching his best at 32.

I agree with you. Maholm is strictly a #5 starter candidate on a good/decent team. With his contract, I expect him to be traded at the deadline if he shows something.

I definitely expect him to be shopped heavily at the deadline, but I do think there's a possibility that they keep him should they not get quite what they want. He does have a fairly team-friendly option and would still be pretty tradeable next year as well. He will be a year older and I do think it's more likely than not that he's dealt this deadline, but I don't think they'll take whatever they can get for him now, though (not that you were necessarily saying that).

Players with similar WAR to Paul Maholm:

Max Scherzer

Shawn Marcum

Ivan Nova

Jhoulys Chachin

Trevor Cahill

Kyle Lohse

Colby Lewis

Bud Norris

Wandy Rodriguez

Mike Leake

Paul Maholm is a #4/5 on good teams.

Letting him hit where he wants because he's making a lot of money isn't a good point. The money he makes is irrelevant towards his value to the team.

The fact that he may be the best slugger on the team this year is value for hitting him 3rd to 5th in the lineup, not first. He's projected to be the 7th most valuable offensive player on the team this year, and that includes someone projected to not be in the league at the start of the season.

He's definitely got a better argument to hit at the top of the order than Darwin Barney, though. And Ian Stewart, probably.

I don't think the argument was around letting him hit where he wants because he makes a lot of money -- it was more around his salary being a sunk cost at this point.

Rogers kinda lost his way there with the whole "doubles and homers are a good way to start an inning" stuff, but the point about placing Soriano wherever he will be most productive, so as to build his trade value, makes a lot of sense.

Finding a taker for the guy is one of this season's higher priorities. Getting his OPS back up to a respectable level is a pretty critical first step. If hitting leadoff helps, then go for it.

The combination of Carpenter and Kurcz is annoying.

The Red Sox still owe the Cubs a PTBNL.

Already been confirmed (Hoyer, I think?) That the Cubs' returning PTBNL is not as good as Kurcz.

I remember hearing that the Red Sox would end up with the better PTBNL, but unless its some 25 year old organizational bum, it's hard to make that kind of statement. I wouldn't expect anything from their top 30, but I could se us ending up with a somewhat intriguing 20-22 year old.

Wow, I thought Carpenter alone was too much. Giving up Kurcz as well is really bad. Nothing devastating since both are simply relievers, but after giving up a pretty non-descript A baller in the exact same type of scenario previously, it seems like we should have gotten away with giving up a lot less.

Weren't Cashner, Carpenter, and Kurcz our top 3 candidates to take over the closer role after Marmol? Obviously, Kurcz would have been further down the road than the other two. Perhaps Hayden Simpson or Cam Greathouse could try to make the conversion if they're each able to rectify their respective issues.
