I remember hearing the Padres were going to wait to receive comp until after the Rule 5 as well.

Or they could just take a guy and have the Cubs agree to not take him back if they stash him in the minors.

 

Or, they could have the Cubs draft a guy for them, since the Cubs would be drafting so much earlier.

But that doesnt make sense. If there was a guy who would need protection who they want, why would they risk the chance someone else the opportunity to draft them.

Someone they like enough to want, but not enough to burn a roster spot, so they wait and see if he's clear. If he's taken, they settle for something else.
