Nick Cafardo weighs in on compensation. It's funny stuff. they still expect "significant compensation".

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/11/17/red_sox_seek_significant_compensation_from_cubs_for_epstein/?camp=misc:on:twit:cafardo

I like how he's proud of himself for suggesting Castro as compensation -- yep, that was a big step forward.

Remember the ranting among Rosenbloom and others about how Ricketts mishandled the Theo negotiation by not settling on compensation before striking the deal with Theo? From the article above:

“They should have never made the deal to let Theo go without the compensation being resolved,’’ said an executive from an American League team. “How can you expect Theo to be able to negotiate a deal for himself? How is he supposed to reach agreement on a significant player for himself? I think that’s asking something unrealistic.’’

And now the fact that we gangstered their top managerial candidate despite the fact that he was clearly our 2nd choice will add fuel to their fire. Give em Jeff Baker and Casey Coleman and tell them to sod off.

why are they still acting as though multiple major leaguers are on the table?

So they think they'll get Byrd, Samardzjia, or Marshall huh? Not bloody likely. Here's my favorite

There is a prospect in Chris Carpenter, who could be a starter or a reliever. Or the Sox could take a chance on returning starter Andrew Cashner.

Yes, please do us a favor and take a chance and take our 25 year old former top prospects who could still be a closer or a 2-3 starter off our hands in exchange for something that we already have.

@ESPNChiCubs Bruce Levine

Boston GM Ben Cherington said a trade between Cubs and Redsox could settle compensation issue for Theo Epstein leaving Bosox.

This idea is intriguing. Especially since Theo knows the Red Sox inside out, perhaps this would be a possible destination for Garza, Marmol, or Marshall.

Unless he robs them blind, they'd better not get Garza.

Trading Marmol as a replacement for Papelbon would be fantastic.

If they really want out of Crawfords deal, what about a Soriano for Crawford swap? I think Crawfords defense might actually be pretty valuable at Wrigley.

This is the first time this has ever been suggested.

And no, thanks.

I doubt they'll take a worse hitter and fielder for one less year under contract.

I wouldn't be opposed to a Crawford/Soriano swap.

3 less years

We'll see what happens going forward, but Soriano was significantly better at the plate last year.

And Soriano is signed through 2014. Crawford through 2017.

I agree if he could play right field (which I think he could). I think right field is the most important outfield position defensively at Wrigley.

Do people realize how horrifically bad Crawford was last year? There's a very real risk that that contract could be a ridiculous albatross for the next 6 years.

I wouldn't do a straight trade, it would take some significant money coming back to convince me to do it. I think over the next 3 year of Soriano's contract that Crawford will be a much better player, but the last 2-3 years of his contract scares me as much as the last 3 years of Soriano's has scared me since the day he signed. If they kicked in most of his last three years, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Half and I'd think about it. If they wanted the Cubs to pick up most of it, I'd tell them to pound sand.

It's actually 3 fewer years under contract - Soriano is signed through 2014, Crawford through 2017.

And I wouldn't have interest in it from the Cubs' perspective. I don't really want to start up the Soriano contract basically from the start again. People worry about Prince or Pujols being albatrosses at the end of their deal, Crawford is far more likely to be an albatross than either Pujols or Prince.

I think Crawford will rebound from last year and I'm not that concerned about the next couple years or so with him. It's years 4-6 that would make me hesitate - he'll get old fairly early in this deal, the athleticism will erode, and he won't have a solid approach at the plate to fall back on.

He was atrocious in April and July. He was average for about half the year, and had a better second half. Overall it was a very bad year. It was also his only very bad year in his career, and very much an outlier. He may never do what he did in 2010 again, but he probably won't be nearly as bad as 2011 either. He could be a 3-5 WAR player for a while still. If Theo does it right, I could be interested in the move.

so then just trade him in three years for another change of scenery guy
