According to CSNtv, they've given the teams another week to figure out compensation.

So, the previous deadline was last Tuesday...so the new deadline should be today, yes?

Whenever the Red Sox have other news to occupy fans so they don't get even more angry when it comes out they (justifiably) didn't get anything worth anything as compensation.

Here's how I see this going down. I just need some help from someone who knows the Cubs' system.

The Red Sox will get two or three minor league players who most people will have never heard of but those that know the Cubs' organization or something about minor league players will be very intrigued by. One of them will be a guy who could be exciting, the other two will be high ceiling guys who have already achieved something in AA that, by some sort of obscure metric will make them interesting players to watch over the next couple of years and will probably rank somewhere between fifteen and thirty in the Red Sox system.

In other words, this whole mess will turn out to be kind of boring. Because of that the Talk Radio shows won't spend a lot of time covering it and it will all go away pretty quickly -- especially because FA stuff will be going on at the same time and that's much sexier.

We will also have a twenty page thread about these players that will somehow turn into a thread about JD Drew, Carl Crawford or LL.

So, knowing this, maybe someone who knows something can tell us all who these players are going to be (two of which will be traded before they ever reach the Bigs).

The most fun in all of this (aside from seeing the Cubs front office materialize) has been watching the dust-up among Red Sox fans. Some hilarious reading there. Funny, I always thought that our two fan bases were kind of kindred spirits.

the cubs' system is just flush with guys with high ceilings who have achieved things at aa, so that should be no problem

That would fit between 15 and 30 in the Sox system

Junior Lake, Josh Vitters, Trey McNutt, Ha (not really high ceiling, but he's at least at AA), bunch o' relievers. How much they've accomplished at AA can be argued, but the first three all have high ceilings and an argument can be made that they've done something notable.

The brain trust continues to grow:

http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2011/11/cubs-hire-shiraz-rehman-as-an-asst-to-the-gm/

From a BP interview with him:

DL: What is your approach to studying predictive data?

SR: It obviously depends on the particular task that we're trying to solve. I think that some of the predictive data, in terms of projections, that is out there and available in the marketplace, is pretty good. We kind of use that a fair amount. We're always looking to establish predictive relationships between statistics or trends. I think that's something that is pretty important to us, it just often becomes difficult to tease out which variables end up impacting a particular issue larger than others. Usually it's a pretty multi-varied process that is pretty complex. As with most things, it incorporates both subjective and objective measures.

Speaking of Cubs stats gurus, it just came up on my feed David Schuster had just posted on Ari Kaplan's page... name sounded familiar but didn't remember who the hell he was until I read about the new guy being hired.

Anyway, Kaplan's latest status that Schuster posted on...
