It's almost 9 a.m. Chicago time. Does no one want to be the first reporter to come out with a report that begins the endless circle of contradiction for the day?

They did have some Silverman guy from Boston on Mully and Hanley today saying basically that nothing was close.

And, IIRC, from the last time we all were discussing this a lot back in February, they didn't have much flexibility to give him much more (largely thanks to the Holliday deal) right?

According to Cot's they have $35 million in payroll freeing up after this season, not including whatever arbitration players cost them (Theriot, Schumaker, McClellan (all Arb 3), Motte, and Boggs (both Arb 1).

Their free agents include Pujols, Edwin Jackson, Furcal, Rhodes, Laird, Patterson, Punto. The only way I could see them offering Pujols more than $20 million or so is to let all FAs go, get lucky in arbitration costs, and sign no other FAs. Or they could raise payroll above the $109 million it's currently at, but this is the highest it's ever been, so I don't know what their capacity to do that is.

I was pretty much convinced Pujols was staying in St. Louis up until this morning. Cards fans are ripping him to shreds, basically wanting him gone at the end of the year. If the Rangers take care of business and Pujols kind of bows out here, I don't know that he sticks around.

The hell? That ish cray.

The way Pujols was talking last night in the pre-game package, it certainly sounds like he's ready to leave.

Cliffs?

Did anybody else think it was weird when Buck basically said he didn't think there was any question Pujols would stay at some point during game one?

Smartest fans in baseball, ya know.

We'd gladly take him. Who out there needs a 1st basemen besides us and the Cards? And have the money to get it done?

Yeah, what the [expletive]? I went to bed with the internet and radio and ESPN all telling me that it was all but done and wake up to the Score shows and their score update breaks saying it was still nowhere near being finished.

Amazing read. I particularly enjoyed the part of the story about the Nomar trade.

Henry, in better days, praised Epstein for respecting players without losing perspective.

"The thing I love about Theo is that as much as he cares about the players, he's not afraid of them,'' he said. "He's not afraid to be ruthless.''

Epstein never was more bold, if not ruthless, than on July 31, 2004. He traded shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, a career .323 hitter who had won back-to-back batting titles, because he had become a defensive liability and was showing signs of unhappiness after Epstein declined to write a new contract based on past performances.

According to someone involved in the process, the Red Sox had offered Garciaparra $15 million per year for four years in the spring of 2003. It was $2 million a year less than he wanted, and he turned it down. When talks resumed a year later, with Garciaparra thinking he held the upper hand over his young GM, Epstein cut his offer to $12 million a year for four years. "Once that happened,'' said the source, "Nomar was something of a goner.''

My thing with the Nomar trade is I still think we won it.

We didn't get as much as we would have liked out of Nomar, but The Red Sox and Expos got even less out what we gave them. Of course Orlando Cabrera was a huge part of Red Sox 2004 ALCS. But does anyone really regret giving up Alex Gonzalez, Francis Beltran, Justin Jones, or Brendan Harris? We also got Murton out of that deal, who was a young, somewhat regarded prospect at the time who later helped net us Rich Harden who was huge for us in 2008.

This is only vaguely relevant, but I recall Hendry "sneaking" Murton into the trade and Theo not being aware of Murton being traded until after it was all said and done. I wouldn't have thought that could happen. Anyone else remember this or should I just file it into crazy made up [expletive] I now pass off as real life memories?

You're asking who out there needs Albert Pujols.

I've heard that from an awful lot of national media.

That's...hilarious.

As odd as it sounds, possibly the Nationals.

Angels need a 1st baseman, Blue Jays might, Orioles do, Yankees and Red Sox could use a DH (though Pujols strongly prefers to play 1st I think). Nationals might be a factor as well.

Obviously the likelihood of some of those teams being a factor varies, but those are the teams that might jump into it, off the top of my head.

I don't remember Epstein being unaware of Murton being in the trade, but I think the Red Sox viewed him more as a rather inconsequential throw-in, while Hendry really liked him. Memory may be failing me there, though.

Not sure about Boston. Unless they can dump some salary. Aren't they pretty tapped out. Yankees are always a factor, but yeah, I didn't think of the Nats.

It's going to be a fun off season with Pujols and Fielder. I still think Pujols is going to stay with the Cards.

Yes, and the money to get it done. Was I not clear enough?
