Peter Gammons is on WEEI right now. He said that everyone knows that the Cubs have a bottom 3 farm system and the fear of giving up the next Billy Williams is 'absurd.' A top 5 Cubs prospect would slot in at about 25 in the Boston system. He also said that the tedious process is because the people negotiating for the Cubs have no idea who any of their prospects are or what they're worth.

That's the kind of hard-hitting analysis Boston is hearing.

Are you sure that's what he said? Any chance you are exaggerating a bit, because that is idiotic and not something I would assume Gammons would say.

I don't doubt it if only because things have been coming apart at the seems for the BoSox. They are revving up their media/PR machine to throw mud all over the place. I agree w/ others: hope Ricketts desire to emulate BoSox ends w/ his hiring of Epstein as it seems they are devoid of class (hell, even sanity) apart from Theo.

Gammons bashed the Cubs' farm system! Let's make fun of his brain aneurysm!

That'd be a stroke of genius. Someone get on it.

=D> Lock the thread, we're done here. Open it back up when the press conference happens.

WEEI is pretty good at getting the audio turned around quickly -- he definitely said bottom 3, used the Billy Williams comp, used the term 'absurd,' used the term 'tedious,' said the slotting at 25 in the Boston system.

The last sentence was a summary wherein he said the Business Ops person (presumably Kenny) and the interim GM (Bush), neither of which have any background in development or the minor leagues system, were running the negotiations and did not know the background of the minor leaguers in the negotiations. I did paraphrase that part, but it's pretty much the bottom line of what he was saying.

I tuned in a LITTLE late -- just happened to see a WEEI tweet that he was on -- this was probably toward the end of his appearance.*

*or interview ... I guess you don't actually appear on the radio.

i have no idea what the reality is here, and asking may only lead to wild speculation, but i am really curious about a few things.

what is the daily schedule for something like this? how much are cubs people and red sox people talking every day? what do they say at this point? i mean, do the red sox just say they want player(s) x and the cubs say no you still can't have that?

Making jokes about something like that really goes against migraine.

I've been wondering this too. Are they on conference calls? Are they sending emails? Have an IM chat open?

They probably get an offer, say they have to discuss internally and give a counter, which is met by the same response. There's no deadline and it sounds like TR is as tough a negotiator as psycho Larry, so both sides are probably dragging their feet. It'd be nice for us to have this done, but Pujols isn't going to signed the day after the world series, so we're not losing anything. And Buster is right that Theo is already planning [expletive] for the Cubs.

ETA the counteroffer likely comes hours later or the next day. I doubt they're talking for hours on end. They may have been earlier on, but that period is over. Esp if they've agreed on guys Theo can take, they should be close on prospects. You don't negotiate piecemeal. The cubs aren't going to agree to Theo taking 2 guys with him if the gulf on prospects is still McNutt v low A lotto ticket.

how much do you think these offers vary from one to the next? everyone keeps saying that the red sox want mcnutt and the cubs won't budge. do the red sox just fax pictures of mcnutt to the cubs all day and then the cubs send back pictures of their middle fingers?

(i might not have taken negotiation theory, can you tell)

I bet Theo is getting really good at Angry Birds over the last week. Or maybe picking up some new things to try with the wife!

I wonder if he is like George Costanza at the Play Now Company and banished to a closet?

The fact that this is probably not what is happening proves we do not live in the best of all possible worlds.

This Gammons stuff is great news. If Boston is holding this up for a 25th prospect in their system there is no reason this shouldn't be closed out today. If they are laughing at us for thinking our prospects are the next Billy Williams, they must obviously realize the corollary that they aren't getting the next Billy Williams either. Therefore, they should prefer cash that they can use to turn into a top 15 prospect through international signing. Otherwise, take anything we offer. A 25th rated prospect is such a crap shoot anyway.

I am sure Boston is leaking this to let their fan base know they are not getting anything so stop thinking we are.

Fax? Is it 1999 again? They're exchanging jib jabs, I'm sure.

I didn't take negotiation theory either, but it's what I did almost all day for 6 years. It's hard to say if the offers are different if the report about guys Theo can bring is accurate. It may be a lot of gamesmanship.

The cubs may be out talking to other teams about FO types that they'll be bringing in, esp if Theo isn't going to be the GM. I'm sure TR knows Theo's wish list for GM candidates.

i don't see anyone saying anything negative about brain aneurysms. this thread is pro-aneurysm, if anything.

[expletive] brain aneurysms. This thread is so not making it through the day.

I don't know about bottom 3. Last I checked, I believe it was last year some time the consensus on the Cubs farm system was that we didn't have anyone who projects to be a star, but we had more future big leaguers than any system in baseball. Also, this was well before the 2011 draft. Astros were at the bottom last I checked, but they likely helped it out somewhat with the Born and Pence trades, and if they trade Wandy in the oddseason, that could help even more. White Sox system is God awful partially because Kenny Williams admitadly used prospects as currency.

If this is anything like the major negotiations I've been a part of, they've already texted each other pictures of their wieners next to rulers and each side is currently trying like hell to bang the other's mom.

Ricketts is probably too busy on safari to pay attantion.

Okay, I decided to listen to the Gammons thing. I disagree with him, but to be clear, on the whole 25th best prospect thing in the Red Sox system, he's only speaking in reference to Trey McNutt. I completely think that's ludicrous (the Red Sox system isn't all that good right now at the top ... ), but if he had been suggesting Brett Jackson was 25th ... that would've been more ridiculous.

Bottom three! Gammons brings the funny.

Anyone know where BA ranked the Cubs and Red Sox farm systems in their 2011 rankings?
