The similarity in our names will only create a great competition which will lead us to greater analysis and opinions in the hopes of differentiating ourselves from the other. We will become bastions of logic and reason in a community yearning for such.

Or we force you all to compete in an online battle royale banning each of you one by one until one remains, and your prize is to then be banned.

My suggestion (many pages ago) of Ricketts making a final offer and a deadline can now be implemented by hiring Hoyer/Byrnes as GM and putting more pressure on the Red Sox. If they don't take the deal, let Epstein sit out for a year on their payroll and secretly advise our new GM on moves to make starting with the millions of dollars saved this year and the prospects kept. Next year hire Epstein as president of baseball operations.

That would be highly unethical on Epstein's part and just as bad on the Cubs' part to ask him to do it. I don't think you want him to be that kind of person.

If you wait a year for him, he's out for the year.

You mean like how Theo is working on the Cubs behalf right now by assembling a staff?

(Just being a smart ass. I don't think the crazy secretly working for us for a year plan is whatsoever feasible or desirable. Nor do I think it's the same thing.)

Well that certainly won't be happening.

I certainly don't know the rules, but this sounds like it might get the Cubs into a significant amount of trouble if it was confirmed someone on another team's payroll was actually GM'ing our team.

Don't go too far out on a limb there.

Well I'm sure Epstein has Ricketts, Hoyer, and Byrnes on his speed dial and if he wanted to call them once or twice a week next year wouldn't be a big deal. They could talk about families, weather, or whatever.

you seriously want Epstein to secretly advise the Cubs while a member of the Red Sox FO for a year? That's insane.

let's just have him sign a ten year extension in boston and work here the whole time, think how much we could save! and we could sign players and have them play on other teams and do bad on purpose.

Isn't there a good GM out there that Theo can hire without compensating another team. Once this Epstein mess is over, and lordy hopefully soon, repeating this process doesn't appear to be optimal. And like WSR said, I certainly wouldn't assume San Diego to be any easier.

Once Theo is in the fold, couldn't he wait a year to hire a gm?

But what if he puts on a trench coat and a mustache(real or fake). They'd never know.

I'm surprised nobody *cough* Backtobanks *cough* has suggested bringing in a third team to deal with here...

Boston gets Grienke and Castillo w/$6.5 mil

Cubs get Theo and Prince

Mil gets Lackey and Crawford

Is that close to a B2B type deal?

Pretty sure even B2B knows you can't trade a free agent.

Padres get John Lackey and Brian LaHair

Red Sox get Darwin Barney, Tyler Colvin, Casey Coleman, and cash.

Cubs get Theo, Hoyer, and Matt Latos.

While the Red Sox trying to juice us for everything they can really pisses me off, it would be hard to fault the Padres for doing the same. With the Red Sox, there has been an obvious rift between Theo and ownership and the relationship had obviously expired. Also, he'd be getting a promotion. With The Padres, they really have no incentive to let Hoyer go. They're a very small market and don't have much going for them aside from a few solid young players, but nobody thinks they'll be any kind of threat any time soon. They're like the poor kid with one cool toy and the rich kid wants to take it from him. While I have no desire to give up any valuable prospects for 1 GM let alone 2, if the Padres try to juice us for all they can, it's hard to really blame them.

It may not affect the Padres' approach to compensation, but I've read that Moorad, lead owner of the Padres, would probably be happy to promote Byrnes to the GMship because they have a good relationship from working together in AZ.

But it may have been Heyman speculating, so take it for what it's worth.

Why aren't we getting Adrian Gonzalez if we're giving up so much?

That would cost us at least Jeff Stevens and Tony Campana and don't know if I'm ready to decimate the farm system like that.

True, but if we give the Red Sox something of value for Epstein, it's only natural that they'll want something as well, especially considering that there's no tension like their is in Boston with Theo.

Then again, I guess a few mil would mean a lot more to the Padres than the Red Sox so we could get away with cash only.

Maybe that's why Ricketts is fighting so hard for a cash compensation package here. Cuz the plan is to raid other teams front offices.
