If we're giving up Szczur, we better be getting some of Theo's assistants from the Red Sox.

Speaking of potential assistants, didn't Byrnes leave the D-Backs farm system in great shape when he was fired?

During his tenure the D-Backs drafted some of the following notable guys...

Max Scherzer

Brett Anderson

Jarrod Parker

Josh Collmenter

Daniel Schlereth

Colin Cowgill

Bobby Borchering

A.J. Pollack

Paul Goldschmidt

Matt Davidson

And probably several others I'm not keen on who are probably pretty good. Not familiar with the international signings, but I'm sure he got some decent quality guys out of that too (Parra comes to mind)

Here's a piece AZSnakepit wrote called "If Josh Byrnes Had Not Happened... An Alternative History Of The Diamondbacks" which isn't really a slam piece on Byrnes (as he states), but it gives you an idea of what they thought of his moves.

But what about the current DBacks farm system? I want to say last I checked their top ten prospects list, I came away impressed. I know Towers has only been there 1.5 years.

8 of their top 10 prospects were drafted by Josh Byrnes. The other two (Tyler Skaggs and Patrick Corbin) came over in the Dan Haren trade that was made a few weeks after he was fired. But all 8 of those top 10 prospects he was responsible for are the results of the draft and not international signings, if that says anything about his drafting acumen (or his lack of international scouting ability)

Post counts..........

2nd half 2011 Game Threads 4,269
4 Theo Epstein Threads 4,835

Go CUBS !!

p.s. Only 122 more days 'til pitchers and catchers report.

Okay, now calculate what % of the Theo threads is actual discussion about Theo.

Inside the article on Byrnes is another article that examines every team's trade history of WAR traded for and WAR given up in trades since 2006. And yes, the Cubs were evidently dead last in the NL during that time frame. Although they did count Josh Hamilton as a trade Hendry made, which isn't fair.

Who did we trade that performed so well elsewhere?

They counted Hamilton, who had a 15 WAR or so at the time the list was developed, which as he said is unfair to count.

David Aardsma	1.4
Carlos Vasquez	0
Jerry Hariston Jr. 2.6
Todd Wellemeyer	0.7
Jon Leicester	-0.3
Corey Patterson	2.8
Josh Hamilton	15.7
Greg Maddux	4.2
Phil Nevin	-0.1
Todd Walker	0.6
Scott Williamson	-0.3
John Koronka	-0.3

I'm sure there are some omissions on both ends. The White Sox don't have Quentin listed as a received player in a trade, who would've provided them with a decent bit of WAR

It's also only through 2010

the Hamilton thing is stupid, but it's grotesque to see just how pathetically little we benefited ourselves with trades during a five-year period

Phil Nevin was the high mark there

??

Posting question marks like that is classic muskat too. Muskat.

That was funny. =D> Good stuff.

Starting to roll with the punches. Alright!

You know who's good at rolling with the punches?

For one I don't believe Bret Jackson, Josh Vitters along with other prospects is too high a price. Save for Castro, I'd give up any combination of players and prospects, in Epstein were looking at someone who's going to change the direction of Cub baseball. A GM who values and understands how OBP correlates to runs which leads to wins - it's worth the price.

Bleacher Nation's source has things coming to a conclusion by the start of the World Series (not new info), and the names he's hearing are Jay Jackson, Matt Szczur and Ryan Flaherty--but not all three.

A little more information to add to the growing list...looking like a consensus now.

what did mojo say? jackson, szczur and flaherty and a hearty handshake.

I'd do that fake handshake, run your fingers through your hair thing. I'm not giving up Szczur.

Maybe I'm gun-shy on that whole thing after the Smardz fiasco, but rather than expect him to suddenly become way better at baseball because he can now focus on it, I'll just wait and see.

But Samardzija did become way better at baseball.

I'm starting to become convinced that maybe 5 people noticed this. In the second half of the season he was arguably the team's best reliever. Hell, after Garza, Dempster, and Marshall he was probably the Cubs' next best pitcher all year. Fangraphs is even a fan of the pitches he threw this year...all had positive values...even more interesting is that he threw at least 4 different pitches.

Shark's got an interesting future...I'm really curious to see what they do with him because he's someone who might be reliever to starter candidate over the next couple seasons.
