This Phil Rogers quote might have already been posted already but I have a question

WEEI Radio in Boston, which has the Red Sox contract and is plugged in, reported that the Cubs are hoping the Red Sox will settle for cash but that the Red Sox – who, by the way, are in a terrific bargaining position at this point – are pushing for two or three legitimate prospects.

Can someone make a case to me why the Red Sox are in a terrific position here? Becuase they really arent, and it makes no sense to me why someone would think that.

But they are. Theo is under contract for another year, and technically don't have to let him go.

The Red Sox are pissing me off with this. It's like their holding him hostage. The guy agreed to a Cubs contract. Now they're being greedy and selfish wanting all top prospects for a guy who already agreed to terms. This compensation should just be courtesy and they should accept a couple average prospects or cash. Not try to friggin rob the farm that your GM that you supposedly highly respect and has done for you over the years is going over to.

Eh, I think some perspective is being lost here.

Yeah, it's frustrating, but we're talking about a holdup of a few days at the most. It's not like the postseason is done yet, so nobody's really missing out on too much time.

If I was the RedSox I'd do the same. What do they got to lose?

I didn't say they shouldn't be doing this. It makes sense they're trying to get whatever they can in return. My point is that at times it seems like the tone from some here is that this possibly won't get done, or that critical time is being lost by this dragging out a few extra days, and both ideas are just silly. Sillypants!

Fred, has this thread passed the output of the last 81 games yet?

Also, Bridesmaids was a very, very funny movie.

I've seen it at least 3-4 times. I love it. Not sure what David's beef with it is? I think he think's it's a chick flick and real men like him don't do chick flicks!

Girl I was seeing dragged me to it and it was awful. Real talk.

There's always that guy.

They don't have anything to lose, and they don't have to let him go, but it would be pretty entertaining to see what they'd end up doing if we pulled out and just hired Cherington.

Hey, you never know. That's all I'm going to say. I stand at 30%.

Hearing red sox asking price is "significant" for theo. And why not? He did win 2 WS titles. Also, #cubs are more motivated

What's his contract situation? Couldn't they just demand compensation for him too?

The White Sox are who we should really blame, what with the whole Guillen fiasco.

What does that even mean?

Allow me to translate from my native language (trolling attention-seeker) to English.

What he said roughly translates to "I'm bored, someone please argue with me so I can feel like I'm getting some attention in this thread."

I'm assuming he means he thinks there's a 30% chance it falls through. If he's saying he thinks there's only a 30% chance it happens he needs to be slapped.

I actually hate to argue and haven't argued in this thread once. Just gave my opinions is all. And trying to control what a mess this thread has become. I'm all for silly threads but this is getting tiresome.

So, first they'd kill his opportunity to take the Red Sox promotion by being asses with the Epstein negotiations, and then they'd block him from another great GM opportunity by demanding compensation for an assistant GM making the move to GM.

Lot of pissed off people running the Red Sox at that point.

If all the information that has come out during this is correct (highly suspect, of course), the Red Sox owe Theo Epstein a $3.5 million conclusion bonus when he leaves the team, and that goes up to $5 million if he finishes his contract in 2012. He has a salary for 2012 of $1.5 million.

Right now, the Cubs are offering to pay the conclusion bonus. So if the Red Sox choose to keep Epstein for a year against his will, they pay $6.5 million for that privilege.

So they can torch their reputation with other young, talented executives and cost themselves about millions of extra dollars. Brilliant strategy just to coax a slightly better prospect out of the Cubs.

Young, talented executives declining the opportunity to work in the most progressive, desirable FO in MLB. Uh huh.

Yeah, they really are handling this poorly, but they are giving up one of the best GM's out there. They aren't going to settle for some middle of the road player.

Better start winding up because that's exactly what he's saying (30% Theo comes here)

See how long they hold that reputation as "most progressive, desirable" when Epstein leads a brain drain after being held hostage for a year and denied the opportunity to more than double his salary.
