He wants more money.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein would be restricted from taking Boston employees to Chicago with him, via a trade agreement between the clubs.

The only exception would be defections that the Red Sox agree to. Sean McAdam of Comcast Sports Net reported around the same time that the Cubs are seeking help from major league baseball on "compensation protocol," but that it is an issue that Boston and Chicago will work out amongst themselves. Epstein, 38, won two World Series titles in Boston and made the playoffs in six of his nine seasons.

Chicago is a great town in which you will fall in love with and you are rich and can fly to Boston whenever you want.

Sources say #Cubs made offer & sticking point is whether Theo wants to leave #RedSox. Tough call, personal vs professional

I wouldn't expect Theo to simply leave Boston with no feelings about it.

I giggled.

LOL. This is just a little better than the Konerko as player/GM tweet.

Also, a team source stressed that Epstein still could remain in Boston and has not definitely decided to go.

at this point, can epstein get this far and show his face in boston? this is the 2nd time he's almost left boston

Well, you just posted what I thought about posting, but decided not to. :)

I would think it pretty hard to go back and explain why Boston should act like nothing happened. Everyone now knows he's actively looking to leave.

New blog post: Epstein not out the door yet - Major league sources said tonight that no deal is in place for Theo ... ow.ly/1f5SQh

What the?

Major league sources said tonight that no deal is in place for Theo Epstein to join the Chicago Cubs in an upper management capacity. But a resolution is expected in the coming days.

Epstein is weighing the decision and is not necessarily a lock to leave the Red Sox after nine seasons. But his interest in the Cubs has progressed to a point where the expectation is that he will leave.

Beyond compensation from the Cubs, the various sides would have to negotiate what Red Sox staff members Epstein could bring with him to Chicago. That is more of an issue for the Red Sox than compensation.

If Epstein leaves, the Red Sox have given every indication that senior vice president and assistant general manager Ben Cherington would replace him. A 36-year-old New Hampshire native and Amherst graduate, Cherington has been with the Red Sox since 1999.

The Red Sox have put their search for a new manager on hold while waiting Epstein to make his decision. Owner John Henry seems willing to let Epstein stay on as GM but also is not standing in his way as he pursues the Cubs position.

The Herald reported tonight that Epstein is on the cusp of leaving for the Cubs. But along with the Globe, ESPN and Comcast Sports New England are reporting that is not quite the case yet.
