I think Van Poppel was allowed to walk as a free agent, and we got compensation for him that I'm sure was spent on some bust.

We picked up him and Worrell off the scrap heap and turned them into Bill Mueller and a comp pick. Let's do that some more.

I wanna say it was Casian.

You would be correct sir.

To make up for the mistake, Lance Johnson. When we traded McRae, Rojas and somebody for Mark Clark and Johnson, I thought we were getting Carl Everett (no idea why I thought that). I was disappointed to realize it was Johnson instead.

Again, not exactly obscure, but we can't forget the first big money bust I can remember, Mel Rojas.

And back to the he was a Cub once group, Todd Van Poppel.

ETA: never mind, Poppel was early '00s. I thought it was longer.

I was so excited about Rojas, thinking we had gotten a stud closer. Then he was awful.

I also hated when we got rid of Van Poppel.

I remember tearing through packs of Upper Deck in '91 or '92 looking for VP rookie cards. It was that years Griffey.

No kidding. They were some really good value during a time when the Cubs really didn't get good values.

Ced Landrum and Hector Villanueva were two of my favorites....Rick Wilkins isn't obscure enough to be mentioned yet I guess?

Did that time end without me knowing?

Not sure if they're obscure but,

Mike Morgan and Terry Mulholland

Nah, they're really not much more obscure than Mark Davis or Kevin Tapani.

ETA: I could have sworn we had Mark Davis at one point. Guess not. Didnt we have someone like him at one point?

Rick Wilkins. Now theres a guy I thought we'd be watching for years to come.

Another Cub catcher I thought would be good (but for no good reason that I can remember) is Damon Berryhill. I think I liked him because I had one of his baseball cards. I was a real deep baseball thinker back then.

Once we hire Epstein or Freidman, it will.

That's how we think when we're younger. If I went to a game and some random had a big game, I thought they were somebody.

NOBODY TOOK THE BEST ONE

jim bullinger

:D

Handsome man that one.

Homered in his first ML AB in St. Louis if I'm not mistaken.

Also, who could forget Anthony Young and his record losing streak?

I have Bob Patterson's autograph somewhere. I got it at old County Stadium in Milwaukee. He looked pissed when he was signing. I then found out we released him the next day.

Can a rookie of the year be obscure? In this case I think so.

Jerome Walton.

I remember seeing Lance Dickson in his big league debut. That didn't last long.
