Correct me if I'm wrong since I haven't been paying as close attention to the playoffs as others, but hasn't Shanahan been deciding some of the suspensions based on the injury the player sustained? Wasn't that part of the reason Weber didn't get suspended for the Zetterberg thing? If that's the case, I'd have to think that Torres is looking at a decent suspension.

If that is the case then Hossa should have faked his own death just long enough to get Torres banned for life. \:D/

Its supposed to be, but there's been little consistency with his rulings. Smith, while he did lie on the ice for several minutes (legit or not), he missed no time in that game, practiced fully inbetween games and played the entire game tonight. Shanahan even pointed out there was no injury sustained and Shaw had no prior history of illegal hits. But of course despite this Shaw gets 3 games.

But all ranting aside, that should heavily play into whatever discipline he will get but like I said I am prepared for any ruling from Shanahan at this point. I wouldnt be surprised if he added 3 more games onto Shaws suspension because his hit forced Torres to have to retaliate. Sounds crazy but anything is possible with this tool running the show.

fwiw, i think that torres will be suspended indefinitely, which will be the playoffs and the first half of next year. then, he will have to apply for reinstatement into the league.

i also think that the hawks should press for a suspension for tippett. if they cannot make a case that the hit was premeditated and torres was under a directive from the coaching staff to injure one of the blackhawks' star players, they can make a case that tippett has lost control of his team and an appropriate punishment would be to bar him from the rest of the playoffs as well. seems far-fetched, but the hawks should at least petition the league.

No chance.

There is no chance of either of these things happening.

Yeah, still really, really pissed off.

The punishment should start at 10 games. Simple as that. This is at least his fourth offense, and probably the most egregious yet. That said, spin the wheel and see what comes up, Shanny. NOTHING will surprise me. Seriously.

As for the series, I think what we saw last night was a team that wanted to lash out, but didn't for two reasons. First, it was a tight game and nobody wanted to put the team shorthanded. Especially with the refs seemingly having no clue and not knowing if you'll get nothing or a game misconduct. Second, their team is a bunch of defensively sound, mildly offensively talented guys. And they don't play a terribly physical game, aside from Torres. So other than taking a run at him, which they should have done, there wasn't really anyone else to stir the pot with. Name one player other than Torres, Doan or Smith who has done anything that really pissed you off in this series? They aren't that kind of team. And so the physical play on the Hawks side hasn't really moved up to the edge.

The problem is that aside from Keith and Seabrook, the defensemen can't shake the hard two-deep forecheck. That messes up the breakout and leads to all the turnovers in the neutral zone, or shitty dumps into the zone that don't lead to any offensive zone time. The centers need to do more to help in the defensive zone, basically.

If the Hawks win tomorrow night, I'll still be pretty comfortable that we'll win the series. Gonna need something from Sharp and Bolland now though, assuming Hossa is out.

With Hossa out I have very little faith. If they managed to win last night, maybe. But that was the emotional opportunity and they missed it. Hossa is a force that wills this team to victory and nobody else can do what he does.

Disagree. I'd bet an indefinite suspension is announced today and then he gets the Matt Cooke treatment.

The second part might be the worst though I've ever read so I agree there:)

Phoenix Coyotes winger Raffi Torres is facing an NHL disciplinary hearing after his hit on the Chicago Blackhawks' Marian Hossa during Game 3 of the Western Conference quarterfinals Tuesday night at the United Center.

The time for the hearing has not been set, but a league source said it will be "ASAP." It's expected the league will ask for an in-person hearing for Torres, meaning the suspension could be longer than six games.

They kept showing his face last night after the hit. He seemed to have that 'I done fucked up' expression on his face. He knows he's going to get it big time.

Looked like that to me as well, I don't expect retaliation from the Blackhawks tomorrow, Torres won't be there and there's too much at stake to goon it up and give an offensively challenged team like Phoenix a bunch of PP time. But, I don't believe it'll be forgotten, some time down the road, when the opportunity arises I believe the Blackhawks will take advantage of that opportunity.

The Blackhawks don't have anyone on the roster that could kick his ass in a fight anyway (not that they'll have the chance now this year). They need to run Whitney/Vrbata when it's clear we're going to lose the series, or run Torres next year if we're going to win the series. With Hossa gone we certainly can't lose anyone else with skill to suspension in the playoffs this year.

This team really needs a couple more tough guys with at least a decent level of skill.

That OT goal was absolutely inexcusable. But outside a gift goal by Bickell in OT on Saturday, Mike Smith has outplayed Crawf.

Following along its also quite clear that Phoenix has been the beneficiary of absolutely terrible officiating - six men on the ice, Torres' hit, Toews being hit by Smith yet called for goaltender interference, etc.

alright, the second thing is the wrongest thing you've ever read? that's a weird thing to say. i'm actually not going to let this go, the more i think about it.

when star players become targets of severe severe goonery in the playoffs and are lost for the entirety of the playoffs, you have to have a way to police this problem. utilizing your own goons on the opposing team's star players doesn't work, especially when the opposing team doesn't have anyone in the vicinity of a marian hossa.

short of forcing a team to forfeit the series, how do you stop this from happening? you have to hold the coach accountable for the actions of the players, i don't see why that's so crazy. again, what is to stop someone like torres from going after a star player again in the playoffs and winning the series for his team by cheating? that's what it is, cheating. there's no way to stop it. if a lesser player sacrifices his playoffs in order to win the series for his team by intentionally injuring a star player, you have to assume that there's some kind of reward in it for him.
