With the Sandberg stuff that just came out, another question occurred to me.

It seems fairly inevitable that Quade is going to get canned. If we actually manage to hire a smart GM (which I'm pretty optimistic about) and he's actually allowed to make his own managerial hire instead of having Ryno thrust upon him, who are some promising candidates, be it guys who haven't done it before but are known to have sound philosophies (or at least have come up around guys who are) or experienced guys who aren't going to be under contract?

I really think Sandberg is getting the job. Something tells me that Ricketts has his GM picked and that Ryno is the man he wants. This is just my opinion. Ricketts has done all of this as he promised when Hendry was let go, behind the scenes and without much comment.

Ricketts didn't promise Sandberg a managerial job.

My vote would be for Willie Randolph. I think most GMs, new or old shool, would find him worthy candidate. He was up for the A's job a while back and I still have my Beane conspiracy.

If Ricketts let a GM who was on shaky ground pick his own manager why would he not let a new GM charged with turning around the franchise pick his?

Because he wanted Hendry to go down in flames while keeping his own hands clean.

Bobby Valentine is already lobbying for the job.

He begain his lobbying about 2 months ago on Sunday Night Baseball.

yeah, i've always kind of been a valentine guy, but that was embarrassing. i hope he steps on a land mine.

if beane gets the job he'll likely hire a broken down, old failure. someone who's got no dignity left, a broken man with no dreams or illusions of being even a respected name. someone who will do whatever he's told so that he can eat that day.

and that's who i want.

i'll accept sandberg as the manager as a karmic tradeoff if we hire an excellent general manager

The level of anger I would have if a quality GM hired Sandberg is infinitely smaller than the level of anger I'd have if they hired a crap GM, or kept Jim Hendry around. The GM is who matters. That being said, I think Sandberg would be an annoying person to be the face of the franchise the next few years.

Right, Sandberg would be annoying, but if he's the focal point of anger it would be because Ricketts and co. screwed up in their hiring of the GM and it's trickled down to a sea of crap yet again.

Not sure if srs, but I think the reputation of Beane managers is grossly overstated. I think he'd go for a Girardi/Francona type, capable of working with him like those guys with their FOs, and a high end on field/in game manager who has similar philosophies to the GM.

Stoney for GM

Sandberg for manager

Maddux for pitching coach

Woody for bullpen coach

Sammy for hitting coach

Dawson for bench coach

Gracey for 1st base coach

Dunston for 3rd base coach

Prior for strength and conditioning coach

Can't by better PR than that baby!

Despite their collapse, I'm still pushing DeMarlo Hale. I'm sure there's other quality candidates, but Hale fits what I'd want. I was disappointed they didn't consider him last year. That said, he's been a part of a winning organization that has been able to combine "old-school" and "new-school" thinking. He's relatively young (50). He's had successful managerial experience in the minors, and has been a successful coach in the bigs. He's viewed as a personable guy that can relate to his players.

Granted, a lot of this was said about Quade, and I was a big supporter of Quade (and he's been a huge disappointment). On paper, though, Hale seems like the type of guy that fits what I'd be looking for.

You've always been one of my favorites here you need to post more outside of the movie thread.

I like Valentine if they go young and rebuild. The Vets hate him.

I loved Sandberg as a player and at this point I have nothing against him as a mgr. I don't have any idea if he'd be good or bad, terrible, or great or average. I don't want him to get the job because he would get get ALL of the credit for anything good, and NONE of the blame for anything bad, and it would be annoying. Here's a scenario I can see the first week of the season: Cubs down 2-1, 5th inning runner on 1st none out. He has a non-pitcher sac bunt, moving the runner to 2nd. From there walk, walk, 2 run single, 3-run HR, 6-2 lead. The Cubs end up winning 8-3 or something. I can see the postgame with Hollandsworth: "it was that sac bunt that put the pressure on the other team that led to the big rally, ya see THATS the difference with having Ryne Sandberg as your manager." I'm not exaggerating, anything that goes right will be all his doing.

If Boston actually coughs up their playoff spot and they're stupid enough to fire Terry Francona, we should be all over that.

Absolutely.

But I can't see Epstein making a panic move like that purely for PR purposes.

They won't fire him. The Red Sox don't strike me as irrationally reactionary like that...OTOH I really, really wish the Cubs had chased after Farrell last year, no hindsight (no really, I pushed him during the hiring period last year).

Doesn't have to be Epstein making the panic move.
