I dunno about that. There is a very slight inferiority complex given that our division and arch rivals the Packers are media darling and have been for years. Traditionally the Bears haven't played a sexy style of football, so I can understand that they don't get the coverage the Cowboys or Packers get. People are just wondering why like 97% of all national writers gave the Bears no shot to make the playoffs this year.

Also, the percentage can be made up for in sheer opportunities. The Bears had the 2nd most number of "Opponent fumbles" last year.

THE BREAKS JUST KEEP COMING! Teams just randomly start dropping the football when they play the Bears. How can one team get so damn lucky?

Are you purposely being obtuse here, or do you really not understand the difference between causing fumbles and recovering fumbles?

Fumble recovery percentage last year: http://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/fumble-recovery-pct

remember last year when the redskins fumbled like 8 times against us and recovered every single one of them?

Well to be fair. Cutler's favorite target that day was on the other team too. That game was about more than fumbles.

yeah, it was about the refs missing a touchdown and lovie not challenging, and an offensive penalty negating a pick-6. that game should have been a win, not that it matters in the grand scheme of things.

This reminds me. How can Lovie challenge a play yesterday that AT WORST gives them a 1st and goal from the 1, and not challenge a goalline fumble against Washington last year that would have been overturned into a probable game winning TD?

IIRC Lovie already lost a challenge in the game and his excuse was that he didnt want to be out of challenges for the rest of the game. Also that he thought his defense could get the ball back in Skins territory because the Skins were pinned on the goal line.

He'd lost a challenge on the previous play, wasn't it? The challenge and non-challenge were very close together as I recall.

Lovie is horrible with challenges. It shall always be such.

lovie was right, though, a couple plays later i think dj moore had a pick-6 that was called back because of a false start.

i almost broke my tv.

Also, you can't read that Barnwell column and objectively say the guy was giving an honest, sober analysis of the game. He got poked on twitter by Bears fans that were berating him and he clearly wrote the column in that frame of mind. It's clear as [expletive] day.

the Nick Roach line cracked me up

Haha...I linked to it a few posts up.

my bad, i must have missed it in the "whine about Bill Simmons" morass

not sure what you mean by 'begrudgingly', though. you've gotta understand predictions/prognostications are going to be completely different than subjective accounts of what actually happened

barnwell is too annoying to read when he's not just spouting out numbers. everything is written through the gaze of a vegas degenerate and i always come away just feeling bad.

Bah, that was as upset as I've been over a Bears game in a long time. Maybe even more so than the NFCCG against GB, believe it or not. Lovie failed epically but we had multiple chances to win the game after that as well and didn't.

On the other hand, we didn't lose another game after that debacle for seven weeks. Martz appeared to make some much needed tweaks to the offensive gameplan.

Nonsense. Unless you base your view of Bears fans off of 20 year old SNL sketches. it's not about a lack of fawning. Idiots have routinely labeled the Bears as the worst team in football without any reasonable defense of such picks. The media in general tends to pile on the negativity surrounding the Bears, apparently due to a lack of franchise QBs for several decades. You will occasionally see a guy like Peter King get overly giddy about them. But it's rare. It is justifiable to say you don't think the Bears will be very good this year and/or they will take a step back. 7-9 is a reasonable prediction, and 10 losses isn't absurd. But picking them to be the worst team in the league is flat out stupid, or purposefully inflammatory.

Well first off, there is a lot of subjectivity in PFF's grading process. That's fine...I get what they're trying to do, and I appreciate that (even if I'm not fully buying it). But there's still subjective opinion in there.

But I really just meant that PFF has been pretty down on the Bears offseason, and while they said nice things about the Bears, it felt more like they were saying "well they weren't completely awful".

Mizzou fans are amazingly hilarious about recruits. Wait until we don't get DGB. "WE DIDN'T WANT HIM ANYWAYS, HE'S GOT BUST WRITTEN ALL OVER HIM"

Indiana basketball fans get the same way about recruits.

My personal favorite spurned fanbase was Nebraska after Tyler Gabbert decommitted. "THAT FAMILY IS INTENTIONALLY COMMITTING AND THEN DECOMMITTING JUST TO CAUSE HARM TO HUSKER FOOTBALL!'"

OU football switches between two memes. Since Barry Switzer supposedly told some recruit "you can come to OU and win championships or go somewhere else and watch championships," when a highly-touted recruit picks someone else, no matter where, that gets said.

If not that, it's "well we need more under the radar 3-star guys that want to work, instead of these 5-star prima donnas!" conveniently ignoring the adrian peterson paintings all over their trailer.

Lets not talk about that one.... I have a lot of friends who went there and I can't hang out with them when it's about college basketball... They can't understand why recruits wouldn't want to go there like it's Duke or UNC or something...

My vote goes to "purposefully inflammatory."

It seems to me one of the quickest ways to get your name circulated these days is to bag on a team with a large, dedicated fan base that will freak out over the pick.

In 2011's world, that means: call the Bears terrible.
