Speculation is leading to boredom, which is leading to drama. Everyone breathe. It will be okay. Our new GM will be an excellent hire.

The Cubs would only look bad if everyone assumes Epstein is their first choice. All that's been reported is that the Cubs have sought permission. So that means he's on the list. Who knows where on the list he is.

do you ever pay attention or do you just wiki-it after the fact and pretend to understand it in its totality?

Pay attention to what? The endless stream of contradictory rumors credited to unnamed sources with vague descriptions like "inside the baseball industry"?

At this point, anybody who doesn't think Epstein is the first choice is either naive or stupid.

1. Ricketts basically said that the Red Sox are his model as to what he wants to do.

2. The media in both towns and nationally are jumping all over the story.

3. He has asked permission to talk to Epstein.

4. The delay can be explained by the Jewish holiday and/or the discussion of compensation.

Now tell me that Ricketts won't look like an idiot if he has a press conference next week to introduce his new GM - Rick Hahn (who he claims was his first choice all along).

Please explain what you're actually complaining about here and what Ricketts has done wrong. He's said NOTHING about Theo Epstein.

So you're criticizing him because Epstein is his first choice? Or are you criticizing him because the media is speculating like they do on everything sports related? Or are you just criticizing for having a "first choice" in his GM search?

I don't believe the Facebook story. It doesn't take that long to decide. If Theo's not sure he wants to interview at this point, the answer is probably no. What does he have to lose by just listening to the Cubs offer?.

I'd assume that if Theo was 95% wanting to stay in Boston he wouldn't risk hurting his standing among Sox fans by interviewing with the Cubs and then staying in Boston.

The story said the Sox haven't granted Theo permission. That's not Epstein's decision. It didn't say he doesn't want to interview with the Cubs.

From the PSD insider who's money. Not sure if he's guessing or knows something, but he knows everyone around PSD takes his word as gospel, so I would imagine it's somewhat more than just a wild guess.

I think the Epstein ship has sailed if it was ever a real possibility. The whole idea of giving compensation of any type for a GM made me cringe no matter how much.

I think Hahn is the lead horse now if I were a betting man.

On a side note, Hahn referring to FIP made me happy:

In discussing Gavin Floyd's slow start in 2009 (and most years), Hahn cited Floyd's FIP and how it was lower than his ERA as a rationale for not worrying needlessly

I don't think anyone truly knows what's going on. As one of those tweets I posted today said, the Cubs have lived up to their promise to keep their GM search internal. To me this seems to mean that there's no chatter out there to be reported on. For all we know the Cubs could still be preparing to interview him and the next time we hear news about the GM search is when a press conference is called to announce the new GM.

That was great! Nobody is going to laugh when Theo is hired.

I got to give it to Paul Sullivan, that takes real guts to print something like that.

I'm just hoping Hahn is the worst case scenario. That little stretch where names like Byrnes and Colleti were being brought up was scary.

I think he is. It's probably a compliment to the type of guys they're going after.

I'm criticizing people who think Epstein isn't the first choice and the fact that Ricketts seems to have gone "all in" for Epstein. Any other choice would have been hired by now.
