According to cubs.com he is expected to make rehab appearances for both Tennessee and Iowa. If all goes well he could return to the Cubs on Sept. 2.

Good stuff. Hopefully it's for starts.

Cashner, who turns 25 on Sept. 11, won a spot in the rotation out of Spring Training but was expected to pitch only in relief when he rejoins the Cubs.

If that is true he will have missed 5 months. Ouch.

Gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 0 walks in 2/3 of an inning, getting both outs via the strike out. He threw 23 pitches for the Smokies.

I like no walks and the K's, hate everything else.

I wouldnt worry about numbers, all thats important is he got out there and threw and felt good after the game.

If true, it's good to see that velo high again coming off shoulder troubles as it's the primary clue that something is up with the shoulder.

I'm sure they will take it easy with him the rest of the way and the question becomes again what to do with him. I'm all for giving him another shot in the rotation but given his past and higher effort delivery a possible back end future pen of him, Carpenter, and Samardzija is somewhat positive yet not what they likely projected to after being drafted.

He's already 25, but I think he should get one more shot. He still has the highest ceiling of any pitcher in the system. Best case scenario for him is probably to start in AAA and then move the Cubs bullpen when he's reaching his inning limit.

I've never thought of Cashner as a high effort guy mechanically. For the most part I really like his mechanics actually....via the eye test.

Posted this on the Minor League thread, but Al Yellon on BCB wrote this morning that Casher reportedly hit 99 mph on the radar gun last night.

Just to not give Al so much credit...the guy who covers the minors on BCB is Josh77. Al has other less informative things to write.

Mechanically, he's pretty sound and even someone like Schilling had shoulder problems during his career. But anytime you generate the arm speed to throw in the upper 90s, there's a lot of torque.

Cashner has 1 more rehab start at AA, then he'll head to AAA.

He's expected to start in the AFL this fall.

I hope that means they haven't given up on him as a starter. That's good news, if so.

Exactly what I thought.

Will he get a big league start or two this year?

No, he's slated for pen duty only.

Cashner strikes out the side. 16 pitches.

That is good to hear. Hopefully he feels fine tomorrow so he'll be on schedule to come back this weekend against the Pirates.
