he homered twice against detroit tonight, his 599th and 600th home runs of his career. he's the 8th player in mlb history to reach the 600 hr milestone.

all of the other guys who are in the club and are hall-eligible are in the HOF. the guys who aren't HOF-eligible are sosa (probably will have a long wait), bonds (might have a long wait, which is dumb), griffey (probably will get in quickly because he hasn't been a widely-rumored steroid user) and a-rod (still active). does thome get in pretty quickly after he retires? i'd guess yes because he's perceived as a nice guy and hasn't been one of the rumored steroid users.

He's pretty ridiculous. He's like Superman, except he plays baseball. It's like he just appeared out of a cornfield with a baseball bat on his shoulder, asked for a glass of milk and started kicking ass.

I had no idea he was getting close. When Jeter was like 15 hits away from 3,000 they were having live look ins for his AB. I didn't even see a "Thome is close to 600" article on ESPN.com.

anyways good for him. I always liked Thome.

nice to see the standing ovation from the tigers' fans and his dad, wife and kids come out on the field to celebrate with his teammates at home plate. kind of fitting they came against the tigers since he's terrorized them for years by playing for three teams in the AL central (his line against the tigers coming into tonight was .292/.433/.630/1.064, and he now has 65 hr in 211 games against the tigers).

Yeah, he gets in first ballot. No ties to PEDs, great reputation and universally liked.

yeah i know he has always been a good guy (charitable off the field) and he was beloved in cleveland and well-liked in philly (don't know much about his time with the white sox or twins, but i assume it's the same).

and umfan is right, this definitely flew under the radar. i knew he had a shot at 600 coming into this year but didn't realize he was so close. i'm sure there would have been more attention if he'd hit 599 tonight and then were sitting on that number for a couple of games, but still, his dad and family have been travelling with him for a while to be there when he hit #600, so there was always the chance he could hit 2 in a game.

Disregard the breaking news graphic, as it wasn't there at all this week... but here is where ESPN had their "Thome-counter"

Also, Thome was and still is awesome. His numbers last year were ridiculous and he was only a part time player. Prior to tonight he played in 63 games this season and drew 31 walks... those 31 walks would be good for 3rd best on the 2011 Chicago Cubs. That's 12 less than our entire bench combined.

I probably haven't scrolled that far down ESPN.com in a long time.

Seriously, is there anyone that doesn't like Jim Thome? If so, that person needs to be shunned and harmed.

I read somewhere that he knew all the vendors and concession stand workers at his home stadiums by name and would chat with them. And supposedly when they were building Citizen's Bank Park in Philly, he showed up to the construction site one day and signed autographs for a few hours and chatted with the construction workers.

Just an all-around nice guy.

A third of his homers (194) came as a DH. I imagine that may hurt him with some voters. My personal opinion aside, I don't think he is going to be a slam dunk or anything close to it. Bagwell was a similar, if not a better, player with a more accomplished resume (ROY, MVP) and he only got 41 percent.

Granted, the situations are a bit different in that Bagwell doesn't have a magic number that the voters cream over and there was/is probably more PED speculation around Bagwell.

First ballot IMO.

Top 10 in career HRs (with no PED baggage) = slam dunk.

I remember being terrified the Cubs were going to sign him for the 2003 season. And I never knew he was such a stand-up guy. Great moment.

Oh well, the guy we got to play 1B instead of Thome outperformed Thome from 04-09.
