Sure there is.

The fact is, if this team is going to compete next year, wholesale upgrades are necessary. 1B is one of the best places to do so with the best available options, unless we want to spend similar money on a perenially injured Jose Reyes or a bit less on a 35 year old Carlos Beltran. Sabathia would also be an intriguing option, but a very expensive one, but The Tigers have shown us how valuable it is to have one shutdown ace no matter how meh the rest of your pitching staff is, of course we don't have the Tigers offense. I know, Penas a great clubhouse guy, but 10 mil is a steep price for a youth mentor.

Couple things:

- 35 year old Beltran will cost alot less than Pujols/Fielder. That said, he should only be an option AFTER bringing one of those two in. He'd be a great piece to the puzzle, but only if a really big key piece is there to help make him a secondary acquisition rather than a primary one.

- The Tigers' offense has 5 of 9 starters currently posting above average OPS'. It's built around one superstar bat (Cabrera), a couple solid vets (Martinez, Peralta), and then a couple of upstart young guys (Boesch and Avila). I think the 2012 Cubs can pull that off if they added a superstar bat. There's talented bats in this lineup (Ramirez, Castro, Soto, and to a much much lesser extent nowadays Soriano), but no one to spearhead the operation of destroying other teams' pitching.

- Agreed that Sabathia is a pipedream. To throw some optimism into that situation....He really liked the NL, he really liked hitting, and the NL would give him a great chance to put up some HOF type numbers to close out a potentially HOF career (which might have a good 8-10 years on it, maybe).

You said he has "zero business on the Cubs" next season, which seemingly implies there's no scenario where he should be on the team. I'm not saying they should sign him, but missing out on Fielder and Pujols would be a pretty good reason to do so since they have nobody to man 1B otherwise.

If they do decide against shelling out for 1 of the big 2, I'd prefer Michael Cuddyer as a plan C over Pena. Younger, better hitter, and can also play outfield if needed.

2007 Carlos Pena isn't coming back, and I doubt that '08-'09 are either.

you forgot to mention a closer who's been perfect, which helps them out-perform their pythag by quite a bit

i guess what i mean to say is, i'm hoping for even better than a team that shouldn't even be .500

Carlos Pena has finally been placed on waivers. Lets hope something happens.

Heath Bell, Carlos Pena, Kubel Placed On Waivers

By Tim Dierkes [August 22 at 2:38pm CST]

Heath Bell, Jason Kubel, and Carlos Pena were placed on trade waivers today, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal tweeted earlier about Jim Thome being placed, also. The placement on waivers starts a 48 hour period during which teams can put in claims. Hundreds of players are placed on waivers in August, but these four are notable because they do appear to be trade candidates.

Pena, 33, is hitting .222/.342/.455 with 23 home runs in 480 plate appearances this year for the Cubs. Though he projects as a Type B, teams might be reluctant to offer arbitration given his salary. Throw in the fact that Pena is still owed about $6MM because of heavy deferred money, and the Cubs would do well to unload him this month.

Travis Hafner has hit the DL, so the Indians could be a great landing spot for either Carlos Pena or Jim Thome. They could be thinking the same way, as they filled his roster spot with a pitcher. Pena would definitely be an upgrade over Matt LaPorta defensively.

Sounds like Hafner may be done for the year.

Cleveland really could be a decent landing spot for Pena.

Whew! I was worried that the Cubs put Grabow on waivers. I'm not quite sure why he hasn't been put out there.

Maybe he has and we haven't heard about it yet. No one's gonna put a claim in but I'd just like to see him in another team's uniform.

It seems to me that we've heard about others being put on waivers, but not Grabow.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Nationals did not claim left-hander Wandy Rodriguez.

ESPN's Buster Olney heard speculation from rival executives Tuesday that the Nats were the claiming team, but that is apparently not the case. Rodriguez has posted a solid 3.31 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 23 starts this year, but he's owed $36 million over the next three seasons. That may keep a trade from getting done with the team that indeed placed the claim. A deal must be finalized by Thursday at 1 p.m. ET.

And the Blue Jays sent Aaron Hill and John McDonald to Arizona for Kelly Johnson.

Posted
The Diamondbacks acquired second baseman Aaron Hill and shortstop John McDonald from the Blue Jays for Kelly Johnson, tweets John Gambadoro Sports 620 KTAR. The D'Backs confirmed the trade in a press release.

Johnson, a favorite of Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos, has slumped to .209/.287/.412 in 481 plate appearances this year. He has $1.16MM remaining on his contract and projects as a high Type B in the National League. He's probably still at least a B in the AL, which has to be Toronto's motivation in acquiring the impending free agent.

Hill, 29, has been worse than Johnson at .225/.270/.313 in 429 plate appearances. His $8MM club option is expected to be declined after the season, at which point he'd be a Type B free agent. I'm not sure what Anthopoulos gets out of the swap. Maybe he thinks Johnson will be a Type A and will decline arbitration, or maybe he's just more inclined to offer arbitration to Johnson than Hill. Or, maybe he hopes to extend Johnson cheaply. Hill has about $990K remaining on his contract. McDonald, a defensive whiz, has about $300K remaining, so the money is pretty close.

From Arizona's point of view, McDonald can pitch in at shortstop with Willie Bloomquist, since Stephen Drew is out for the season. As for liking Hill over Johnson, perhaps GM Kevin Towers feels a change of scenery will help, or he prefers Hill's defense.

The Diamondbacks and Blue Jays last matched up on a trade three years ago, when the Toronto acquired David Eckstein for Chad Beck.

I wouldn't have minded taking a chance on either Hill or Johnson. Both may do well with a change of scenery.

.

I guess it could be anyone. He's under contract for 2 more years, with a team option for a 3rd, and if there's a team out there who feels that he is an ace, he could be worth the 11-13 mil/year.

Rockies Claim Wandy Rodriguez

By Tim Dierkes [August 23 at 2:42pm CST]

2:42pm: The Rockies won the claim on Rodriguez, tweets Rosenthal, and talks are ongoing. The Rockies are particularly low on starting pitching depth at the moment, and must have the idea of another miracle playoff run in the back of their minds. They're currently 8.5 games out. Otherwise, Rodriguez would provide veteran depth for the next few seasons with Ubaldo Jimenez gone.

Well there we have it.

If it is the Nats and they could pull off a trade they'd have a nice little rotation going into next year...

Strasburg

Rodriguez

Zimmermann

Lannan

Detwiler

The Nats are the only team I'm scared of in the Fielder/Pujols chase once either one or both hit the market. They're trying over there, and 1B is definitely a need area.
