Reed Johnson for a PTBNL from a team that cant afford real pickups and have thin benches is probably the only way Reed gets traded.

Which I wouldn't be against.

no, you repeated twice that there's no reason he won't keep up what he's been doing.

No reason to believe that he won't.

Are we still on this or had you just been spending a few hours looking for the ideal gif? Johnson has been a very solid bench player all year, and yes, I have no reason to think that he'll just suddenly fall off a cliff, assuming he remains in the same role he has been in. Saying there's no reason to believe that he won't is far from guaranteeing that he will.

His BABIP is .409. Neither he, nor any other player in baseball can sustain that. Therefore, you do have reason to think he can't keep it up.

Taking this in a different direction, and thinking hypothetically here, if ARam were willing to be traded after making it through waivers (I think that's how that works; correct me if i'm wrong) and assuming the angels would be the team most likely to trade for him, who in the angels system would you like the cubs to target? and who do you think the cubs could reasonably get?

I have a question about BABIP. If someone is hitting .350-.360 wouldn't their BABIP need to be close to .400? Unless the player hits a ton of HRs, his BAPIP is going to be higher than his avg. Wouldn't the difference between avg and the BABIP or at least the players historical difference between the two be important? Mayby line drive % would be a better used in some cases?

I'm not saying that Johnson is going to keep this up, I'm just trying to better understand BAPIP and how it is applies in some cases. It makes more sense for me when applied to pitchers or if there is a large gap between a players avg and BABIP. Thanks

alfonso soriano has cleared waivers. #cubs willing to pay a major, major chunk of $50M-plus left. hes really a dh now

I think it would take the Cubs paying 46 out of the 50 million for someone to take Soriano from them.

Agreed; I'm not optimistic at all.

I'd say, "Hey, the Jays pulled it off with Wells." But he was at least coming off a decent season. Soriano can still hit for power but that's about it.

Tigers acquired OF Delmon Young from the Twins for LHP Cole Nelson and a player to be named later.

Young, 25, has posted a disappointing .266/.305/.357 batting line, four home runs and 32 RBI in 84 games this season for Minnesota. But he had an .862 OPS, 21 homers and 112 RBI last year, and the Tigers will hope he blossoms again with a change of scenery. He should see regular action in the Detroit outfield down the stretch.

Toronto also has one of the best GMs in the league while Anaheim has one of the worst. Hendry would probably feel too guilty about fleecing a fellow "baseball man" to even contemplate not kicking in at least 50%. (please don't bring up Hundley)

omg Soriano cleared waivers! Shocking!! Did they even have to wait the normal time period, or did Hendry just say, 'hey Soriano's on waivers', and they replyed "cleared".

The Tigers acquired Delmon Young from the Twins for some minor leaguer.

Tigers Acquire Delmon Young

By Tim Dierkes [August 15 at 1:33pm CST]

In a surprising intra-division deal, the Twins announced today that they've traded left fielder Delmon Young to the Tigers for minor league lefty Cole Nelson and a player to be named later. The press release notes that the PTBNL must be chosen on or before October 15th. The Tigers already had an open spot on the 40-man roster for Young. It's not yet clear whether Young cleared waivers, or just made it past the seven American League clubs that would have allowed the Tigers to win the claim. Young won't have to alter his plans, as the Twins were headed to Detroit tonight to begin a three-game set.

obviously he's a pretty crappy player right now, but i'd have liked to give him a try

(also note in this fantasy world where my GM wishes were to come to fruition, we'd also have an organizational philosophy pressing him and other free swingers to adopt a somewhat more patient approach [doubt the Tigers are the team to cure him of his bad habits, though])

Interesting note from Stark:

Carlos Pena's name still hasn't shown up on the waiver wire, those clubs report. But teams that have spoken with the Cubs say they seem no more interested in moving Pena now than they were in July, unless they get something back that makes it worth their while. We were told by one source with numerous friends on the Cubs: "That's a bad clubhouse. And he's one of the few guys holding it together."

You can't afford to have the clubhouse struggle when fighting for 70 wins.

And leadership is so much more important at 1B than offense.

If Ricketts has such a hard-on for the Bosox, hire a backup catcher to be the "leader" and be done with it.

I thought this was Koyie's clubhouse. Who's house? Koy's house!

As I've said before, Carlos Pena has 0 business being on the 2012 Cubs. If they plan to compete, they'll need an upgrade. If they don't plan to compete, and plan a youth movement, there's no reason to pay Carlos Pena another 10 mil or so.
