Awesome. Why does Hendry fall in love with the idea that being a good guy outwweighs their playing ability? We need to get a GM with a cut-throat, take-no-prisoners attitude. This is a business and it seems that the Chicago Cubs don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

Not motivated probably means the Pirates wanted the Cubs to pay almost all the salary and still not give back anything of value.

Yeah, I'm hoping this sort of thing is the case, that the lack of motivation was due to a piss poor offer. If the return isn't even worth the potential comp pick, then it's not worth it.

If Hendry doesn't want to move him just because he doesn't want to move him, that's something else altogether.

I understand Byrd, but Pena needs to go for whatever we can get, even if it's no better than the Kosuke package.

The difference (unless I'm mistaken) is that we weren't going to get any comp picks for Kosuke, but we can for Pena. And Pena is more valuable.

So, for the 8th straight year (since 04) - the Cubs are on target for surpassing the 3M mark in attendance. 4 of those years we finished above .500.

Why is Ricketts/Hendry scared to pull the trigger and let some of these guys go? And - dare I say it - possibly make the team better down the road? Its not like people won't come to the games.

Do you really think we're going to offer Pena arbitration if our offseason is centered around signing Pujols and/or Fielder? I'm not saying that we know for a fact it is, but it's possible that's the case, and if so I doubt they chance offering Pena arby

Because they'll get a comp round pick for Pena. If the Pirates are offering a player with less value than a comp pick there is no reason to move him.

Pena is currently not going to receive a comp pick. He's very close, but it's not a guarantee. Plus, Pena is not a lock to decline arbitration either.

I have this sick feeling that the Rickets family will somehow bow out of the Pujols/Fileder bidding and try to sell us on Pena as our long-term 1Bman.

That would not be good. Not at all.

Yikes. Didn't realize he was that bad last year.

I'm not sure why you'd have that feeling. I'm pretty sure they won't try to convince us a 34 year old is a long-term option.

Being able to sign either Pujols or Fielder isn't at all a sure thing and a 2 year deal for reasonable money for Pena wouldn't be the worst thing if they don't get either of the two since they have no good options to replace him in their system. Personally I think there is a very small chance that Pujols doesn't work something out with the Cardinals which would then leave the Cubs in a bidding war for Fielder and some team is likely to throw crazy money at him since he will be the most coveted bat left on the market.

But I guess a two year deal isn't really a "long term" option anyway if they can go that route.

Signing Pena would be a bad move insomuch as it's a sign that it's going to be extremely difficult to contend if we settle for him. There's a limit on exactly how high I'd like to see the Cubs go to get Fielder, but it'd be a pretty high limit. He or Pujols are almost a must this offseason.

I don't think there should be any doubt at this point that the Ricketts are willing to spend money - the rumors that we're going to sign Maples, Vogelbach, Dunston, etc, show that. The question I have, however, is what is the balance going to be between the major league and minor league budget. If the Cubs don't drop payroll, however, we have a very good shot of coming out of the offseason with Pujols or Fielder at a minimum and possibly/probably CJ Wilson as well.

I'm hoping Hendry doesn't see keeping Pena as an insurance policy if we don't get one of the big first basemen. By the time those two are off the market, any benefit we receive from keeping Pena will be gone. There's really no reason not to trade Pena, though I could understand turning down a few poor offers hoping to get a better one before the deadline or sometime in August.

Exactly. If Pena is not traded come Sept 1st, Hendry has failed, period. He's an FA after the year so if they want him back so badly they can re-sign him if they miss out on Fielder or Pujols. Even if it's a bad offer, if it's the best one you have, move him.

I don't see why it would be "extremely difficult" to contend with Pena if money is spent other places to improve the team. I haven't looked it up, but wouldn't think the win share difference between him and Fielder is that great. It seems with his power numbers and OBP he isn't a liability.

Cubs informing other teams that they will not trade Carlos Pena before the deadline.

If you are sitting by your computer wanting to see what moves the Cubs make, I suggest finding something else to do.

Ladies and gentleman, your 2011-2015 Chicago Cubs 1B, Carlos Pena.

Theres a massive difference between not wanting to blow up the team and being an awful GM.

My only hope is that this is some desperate last attempt for leverage.
