I don't really see the point of this trade. Is it solely to free up a spot for Colvin? No money savings, poor prospects in return. What exactly is the upside? Why not just keep Kosuke or maybe shop him elsewhere?

What's Kosuke going to do for us? Move us from the #2 to #3 pick next year?

Then we should have gotten rid of him sooner, dammit.

If that's the deal, I don't really care if we pay all of his salary. Fukudome is of no value to us this year. 2 decent but flawed prospects is a fine return. And we can sign fukudome after the season if we're so inclined.

I want the cubs to make a few small trades like this. I don't want to part with any of our players that would net the top guy is another team's system. So move small pieces for projects that may help down the road and don't [expletive] up this off-season.

Seems like a Throw It Against The Wall And See What Sticks deal.

Whatever. Kouske wasn't going to command much and he wasn't going to save the season. It's a wash.

I hope Kosuke helps them out, never had anything against the Indians.

As for the return, if we save a little cash and it opens up a spot to play Brett(or even Colvin for the rest of this year) I'm OK with it. Didn't expect much of a return whatsoever.

#Indians picking up $775,000 of what remains on Fukudome's $13.5 million deal for this year.

Use that money on an overslot guy from the draft.

Wait is there actually a possibility of bringing Fukudome back? I'm not against it if he's cheap, but I had no idea that was something being discussed.

I would imagine it's possible, but not likely. He seemed to enjoy his time in Chicago and has said he wanted to stay here in the past (at least I am pretty sure??). Unless Colvin shows major improvements in RF the rest of the year I wouldn't be opposed to bringing Kosuke back for a 1 or 2 year deal. Especially since it seems Jackson/Szczur will need to start next year in the minors due to injuries and needing more time to work on things.

Yep, throw whatever saved directly into the draft budget hopefully.

So we got less than 1 million dollars in salary relief, and got one "prospect" that is 25 and had a 6+ ERA in AAA last year, and another "prospect" that is in high A and has a .294 OPS and .723 OPS this year.

Oh well, better than nothing I guess. Wasn't expecting to get much for Fukudome.

would've been nice to save a little more than that, but when you consider that penalver and candelario were basically that amount together, and mcnutt was like $150,000, you realize that $800k can go a pretty long way in amateur spending.

MLBTR tweeting like it's now a done deal. Haven't seen anything on how it will impact today's lineup.

MLBTR had posted Colvin will be recalled to play RF. Depends on how long they were working on this deal, but he could potentially be in Milwaukee for the game today if they knew this was getting done. Or else it will probably be Johnson or Dewitt.

One of the writers said on twitter that Colvin was with the team in case the deal was done before game time.

@jimcallisBA: Abreu has bat speed/pop, Smith has arm strength. Org types more than prospects. @l2uff: who are abner abreu and carlton smith #cubs #indians

@BenBadler: Marginal guys. Good for Indians RT @JimBowdenESPNxm Cubs acquired OF Abner Abreu, P Carlton Smith from the Indians for Fukudome & cash

Not too enthused with either prospect in return. Seen enough of Abner Abreu at Kinston to doubt his ability to translate his potential into production, but who knows. Smith is a dime a dozen upper level guy who might fit into middle relief if things go well, otherwise will be an upper level arm.

All that said, considering how badly Kosuke had spiraled after April, it's a decent return. One potential useful arm in the next year or two, and a possible lottery ticket.

Yeah this is basically a wash. Maybe one of the prospects will turn out decent. If not, no big deal.

No, but if the Indians are getting Kouske pretty much for free we should have gotten something better. I'm not saying their top prospect or anything but something better than the return we're getting now.

The way I see it, if were a few hundred grand away from someone like Maples and/or Vogelbach, theres our answer.
