Here is something that I have noticed about Szczur that may be an anomaly or something more: When Szczur was not with Peoria during his college graduation and his recent absence for the futures game - the team went on a winning streak. I am not saying it has something to do with Szczur, but Peoria's record this year is not good and they have been blown out on numerous occasions.

Just a thought to put in the back of the mind when evaluating Szczur as he climbs the organizational ladder. Maybe (a big maybe), for all the press he has received for doing good deeds and being a good guy, maybe he rubs teammates the wrong way. Again, just a thought going forward and I hope I am wrong.

And so it begins.

So your theory is that a) Szczur rubs his teammates the wrong way because he saved a little girl's life and got publicity for that (w/ no proof on that) and b) because of a), you think his teammates play better when he's not there.

Even if he did rub his teammates the wrong way, why would that alter their ability to play? Maybe Peoria won their most recent games because Kirk and Peralta pitched well.

When Szczur was not with Peoria during his college graduation, the team went 1-2. When Szczur was not with the Chiefs as he went to the Futures game the team went on a 2 game winning streak.

Damn, I didn't even bother to see if the Chiefs were actually winning when he was gone.

Sample size.

Let's see how they do now that he's gone for good before we draw any conclusions.

He's pretty much the next Milton Bradley of clubhouses amirite?

Nope, he's white and will therefore be loved by all the reporters. They'll need to vent onto Castro.

Szczur was gone for over a week for his graduation - the team was 5-4. Remember the speculation on this board that he must have had a really good time.

Anyway, I expected a quick reaction to this small query. Looking at stats and other numbers is only a small portion of what makes a player a prospect or non-prospect. Thinking about what is not said or done can lead to other insights that further our knowledge of a player's capability. I noticed something I thought was unusual and posted for others to speculate. I am not attacking the perceived good character of a prominent Cub prospect, but any good examination of a prospect starts with a good base of critical analysis. We shouldn't tie our emotions of wanting a player to succeed and overlook flaws that may hinder a prospect in the long run. Good analysis means having the ability to throw away insights when disproved and I expect the anomaly of Peoria's winning without Szczur to be disproved. However, its still important to speculate.

And Raisin . . . I respect you too much to take your quick, misunderstood analogy of what I said to heart. The theory of Szczur rubbing his teammates the wrong is not tied to their perception of his public persona. But, his public persona can mask our understanding of how well Szczur gets along with his teammates (good or bad).

I hope Szczur can bring Daytona out of its recent funk. The roster has been stripped of many of the players that brought such great, early success.

Not true. He was hurt and gone for graduation. The time frames just happened to coincide.

Yep it was in the Peoria Journal-Star as well as reported by the Chiefs radio announcer that Szczur was gone for the weekend series in Kane County, and missed the remainder of the games (during which they went 5-5 in total, not 5-4) due to nagging injuries. Unless your theory is he only has the negative effect while actually playing as opposed to being around the team in the clubhouse with injuries.

What went unreported is that the injury was sustained when his manager ordered a code red and all his teammates beat the crap out of him. Until you've done the critical thinking on this you cannot disprove my theory.

Well yeah, you passive-agressively are. You're not using a good base of critical analysis to bring up the topic, you're looking at a largely unimportant statistic in an absurdly small sample size (even figuring in those games he missed due to injuries around graduation, you're talking about 11 games with far from a normal distribution of starting pitchers or opponents.)

If there had been whispers of Szcur having issues with his teammates, it could be something to base things on. If he wasn't a FCS national champion in football (a sport that relies a lot more on the team concept than baseball) compiling a 37-10 career record, there might be something to base it on. Instead, we've got the equivalent of Catcher's ERA.

Not really, because that is a stat and stats are bad. This is critical analysis.
