Figured this was the best place to put this as I hadn't seen it elsewhere:

From Bruce Miles' blog today

The Cubs have sent pitcher Hayden Simpson, their No. 1 pick from last year, from Class A Peoria back to Mesa.

This should have happened a long time ago. If the Cubs knew that his velocity was down and he was still not physically back from his bout of mono, then they should have never thrown him out there in the first place. All it could do is one, hurt him mentally and two, hurt him further physically if he tries to rear back and throw something he's not capable of at the time. They should have put him in Mesa until he could get his strength back to some level it was in college.

I just hope he's not done for completely.

Whos pitching for Peoria tomorrow?

Monday - Austin Kirk v. Clinton RH Jandy Sena

Tuesday - LH Eric Jokisch v. Clinton RH George Mieses.

Thanks!

brett jackson just got tossed.

he had been called, somehow, for interference at firstbase after a strikeout by the next batter. if that makes sense.

was unaware that vitters was actually playing firstbase now.

anyhow, jackson was 1-3 with a walk; vitters is 1-3 also (but no walk)

McNutt may have tired. He was 4IP 6H 1R 1W 3K at one point and I'm almost positive he was at 63 pitches then. He obviously fell apart in the 5th. I was kind of surprised to see him out for the 5th anyway.

Is Jackson back to low 90's now or has he been sticking in the upper 80's all season? I gotta admit, I haven't kept up with AAA at all this year, just because there were very few guys worth following there. Bruce did mention that the Cubs are probably just looking for Jay to have a couple or three good outings in a row and he'll get a shot at the big league rotation......

cuban signee frank del valle has faced 10 batters through 3 innings - 2 walked (one of the was caught stealing) and the other 8 struck out.

Arizona Phil was predicting an outing like this out of Del Valle. Sounds like he has the stuff to at least carve up rookie ballers.

Yao-Lin Wang with 4 scoreless thus far for Boise. His ERA is below 1 again.

What is the deal with Logan Watkins? In June, he OPS'ed 1.071 and so far in July he is hitting .308 with an impressive.438 OBP. Wasn't he an overslot guy? Granted he doesn't have a lot of power but he seems to have some speed and a knack to get on base.

Is it me, or is there not much point in keeping Tyler Colvin in AAA any more? He's hitting the ball about as well as can be expected from him.

He needs the playing time he won't get in the bigs, at least until Fuku and/or Reed are traded.

Knoxville News-Sentinel[/url]"]Smokies starter Trey McNutt is still working his way back to full strength after his third stint on the disabled list. In just his third game back, McNutt pitched well for the first four innings, but had a disastrous fifth. McNutt gave up four hits, including a triple and a three-run homer to put Tennessee in the hole, 5-2.

McNutt pitched 5  2⁄3 innings, giving up 10 hits and five runs, all earned, with a walk and six strikeouts.

“There were some positives tonight,” Harper said. “He (McNutt) had better breaking stuff. He ended up throwing 70 pitches. He hung a breaking ball to (Neftali) Soto for the three-run homer, but it was definitely better than his last two starts.”

gotta like what hernandez, zapata and amaya are doing in arizona as 18 year olds. don't like the part where zapata was pulled after his first at bat tonight though.

geiger has been hitting well too (9 XBH in 11 games), and even blair springfield seems to have learned how to hit a little.

I was mildly surprised that Geiger was sent to Arizona. I'd be surprised if he didn't get a call-up to Boise at some point later this summer, provided that he is still going strong.

May be that they wanted both Wilson Contreras and Geiger to have the ability to play 3B every day. The normal principal is that the lesser prospect defers to the better. Assuming that Contreras was viewed as the better, Contreras got Boise and that meant Geiger got Mesa?

The perception of "better" and "lesser" is of course fluid, so Geiger's power hitting and projected size might move him past Contreras, who's power seems projected rather than present. Contreras is really only half a year younger, so age isn't that much of a difference.

I do have the sense that what's now is now, but that some perceptions were built during fall instrux and then carried over into XST. I suspect that Geiger didn't hit well earlier, and it wasn't until late in XST that he started to kick in. During many of the XST box scores, it seemed like Contreras was routinely batting 3rd while Geiger was batting 7th, 8th, or 9th, and Contreras was getting more hits while Geiger was K'ing more. But that doesn't seem to be how it's going currently, obviously.

Craig, I believe your impression matches what Arizona Phil said - that Geiger was struggling in extended but turned it on in the final weeks.

I wonder if they'll have Yao-Lin Wang bump up to Peoria to replace Hayden. Wang doesn't seem too challenged by Boise. Luis Liria would be another option. And this would allow Starling Peralta to get out of Mesa and head to Boise.
