Red Sox Designate Mike Cameron For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 30 at 11:14am CST]

The Red Sox announced that they have designated outfielder Mike Cameron for assignment and called infielder Yamaico Navarro up to take Cameron's place on the team. The move opens up a 40-man roster spot.

Boston expected Cameron to hit left-handed pitching this year, but he has just a .143/.214/.302 line in 70 plate appearances against southpaws. The 38-year-old three-time Gold Glove winner has played all three outfield positions for the Red Sox.

Cameron is in the final year of a two-year, $15.5MM deal with Boston and earns $7.25MM in 2011. The Red Sox still owe him roughly $3.625MM this year and they're responsible for that entire sum unless they trade Cameron - they'll explore possible deals - or he finds a new team after being released. If he's traded, Boston will surely take on significant salary and if he signs elsewhere, his new club will owe him a pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum salary.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe first reported the move (Twitter links).

Yet the Cubs refuse to part ways with John Grabow no matter how awful he is.

As bad as Cameron has been in his time with the Red Sox, there are a lot of contenders in need of offense, so I cant see him out of work for too long at league minimum.

Why would they pick up Cameron if they're in need of offense?

In fairness, anybody they call up from their system is probably going to be even more awful.

I would bet Beliveau could do a much better job than Grabow at the back of the pen right now.

Cameron is another guy lots of folks here wanted the Cubs to sign two winters ago.

Mostly because people wanted a serviceable player who would be cheap and not signed into a longterm deal. Fortunately Byrd was willing to sign as cheap as he did and for only 3 years.

I'd love to bump a davearm post to give him an I told you so, but I realized I can just do it for any bad move the Cubs have made in the past 5 years.

and many people though byrd signed for too much at the time. Despite Cameron's past consistency it just seemed likely this contract would end bad for him.

One of the reasons he was signed to only a 2-year-deal. It would be nice to be in the Red Sox' situation where a team can afford to take a chance like this and it isn't a make or break-type of signing.

At least on this site there were very few people who thought he signed for too much. There might have been a handful of people saying he signed for too much, while most of the complaints were over the deal being too long (wanted 2 not 3 years) and him not being an impact player (true).

There were very, very few complaints about the money in the deal.

I was gonna say the same thing. Byrd was a good bargain and the signing made sense at the time considering the other options.

In a couple years when Wood retires, I'm sure you'll find a couple idiots saying things like, "He's overpaid!" and "We should have never brought him back!" but that's because you can find at least a couple people that think chickens give live birth.

That's a bit of a misrepresentation. People wanted him, but that was when they thought he'd be cheap and come on a one year deal. He was neither.

I made the mistake of getting into a discussion with a random fan today, and I'd forgotten how awful it can be. Apparently:

Garza is a No. 4/5 pitcher because he saw him in Minnesota his rookie year and he was awful.

The Cubs should trade Soriano for picks

Ramirez is only good in contract years.

And that is why I love this site. It is unbelievably hard to find a well informed fan. Whenever I talk to friends it's always Darwin Barney is awesome, Aramis is lazy and I hope we give away that head case Zambrano. It's more than slightly irritating.

Right about now, Barney is getting the same love that Theriot was at the height of his popularity. I try telling people that there are better options waiting in the minors, but they'll hear none of it. However, even the most casual of fans seem to be taking notice of Vintage Aramis. Theres also a lot of Campana love out there, but then again, Cubs fans always love their small, white players.

Still a ton of Colvin love, too. I've heard/talked to a number of people that still don't like that the Cubs signed Pena and think that Colvin should have been the full time 1B.

While I don't think Barney is amazing, he is doing a decent job at the major league level. As for the "better options waiting in the minors", let's see how they develop before deciding they can handle a full-time position in the majors.

He had a nice start, but Barney has been pretty much awful for two months now.

the .680 OPS isnt really a decent job.

I still think Barney ends up with a 8-10 year MLB career between 4-6 teams as a utility player.

Which if true might make him better than some of those "better options waiting in the minors". This is especially true when you consider the Cubs' record on developing position players.
