Pierre LePage off Peoria's DL. Peoria also added Brandon May and the Gooz to their roster.

Lotta hits surrendered by Beeler but no runs and no walks thus far: 5 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

He's thrown 67 pitches (49 strikes, 18 balls). Control definitely a plus for him.

Second straight day with a walk for Vitters...it's his 8th of the season.

Another great outing by Kirk. Isn't it about time he got promoted?

It would be fantastic if the Cubs had a lefty starter move in to top 100 this year. If he maintains a 1.24 WHIP and a 3.10 K/BB, I think he could be a consideration.

Is there a shot that Kirk could get into the top 100? Perhaps, but his ceiling isn't that high, and that might hamper him a lot when it comes down to discussions by the various people that do the major lists.

I'm not even sure there's a consensus here that Kirk is currently a top 10 prospect in our system right now. I tend to lean to him on the outside of the top 10, but there's certainly a case for the last few spots. Our system is middle of the pack, at best, though, so it's somewhat hard for me to see Kirk in the top 100, but not impossible.

As toonsterwu just said, unless his FB has improved velocity-wise, he's not even in my Cubs top 10.

And that's before we sign anyone from the draft.

As a total side note, I feel like Baez is my only lock to crack the top 10 of our system. Perhaps Vogelbach, but I'm far less certain that I'm committed to putting him top 10, even with our system in a middling shape right now. I can't put Maples in there, assuming he signs, as I don't see why I would jump him over Ben Wells and Austin Reed, and I'm not sure either is top 10 (maybe 1).

If Maples signs he'll definitely make my top 10. Baez will be top 5 and Vogelbach has a shot, he'll be top 15 at least.

Reed and Wells weren't considered the prospect Maples is. Wells came on strong, but he was talked about as a 3rd round type at best in a draft that doesn't compare to this one, where Maples was considered a 1st or supplemental round talent. Down the line, who knows if Maples can stick as a starter or not(and I think Wells will honestly) but for now, Maples would be the superior prospect, in my eyes anyway.

I thought he was throwing low 90s? I'm fine with that from a lefty that can strike out almost 9 per 9.

Last year, he was primarily 85-88.

I agree, Kirk with a fastball that's viewed as 85-88 looks like one kind of prospect, if we're told that he works at 90-92 and touches 95, he's on all of our top-10 lists.

My guess is that he probably is at least in the 88-92 range, otherwise he probably wouldn't be doing so well. Hard to be as consistently effective as he's been if he's living on a curveball.

With Whitenack, there were doubts, then suddenly we were told 91-94 and everybody jumped on.

My guess is that if Bruce asks Fleita, and reports that Kirk is now consistently in the 90-93 range, that he'll be easily a consensus top-10 guy.

I read elsewhere that Kirk was in the 80s at Cedar Rapids but there were questions on their radar's accuracy.

Nate, if you see this, what has Austin Kirk been throwing his FB at this year?

Well ... specifically on Wells, as I'm far more bullish on him, I see a guy with a better frame, better mechanics, similar, if not, better fastball, and better control of his stuff at the moment. Maples, by most accounts, probably has a superior breaking ball, but Wells breaking ball made strides. I can see a case for Maples over Reed, although I think that's close as well (Reed is a bit more projectable body-wise and we have a year's worth of data along with the fact that he's cleaned up his mechanics a tiny bit by most accounts). That said, I'm far more bullish on Wells than most (only guy in the system that I think has ace potential).

I've had a couple folks tell me that Kirk is around 88-89 most of the time, but that's based off two appearances, so if Nate comes around, that would be great.
