There's just not a lot known about Rosario. But, he's 17, has good pop and a good arm. I'm definitely glad he signed. Not really surprised DuVall got that kind of cash, as he's a soph. Read on PSD from a guy who's supposedly plugged in, that Maples and the Cubs are waiting to see how he's doing this summer before a decision is made, but the Cubs are at 1.85 and he's at 2.2, with the general idea that 2 mill gets him here. Not sure whether or not this guy is THAT plugged in, but he definitely knows his stuff. Jacquez has struggled this summer to date, 6.20 ERA in 24 innings against college guys with bad control, so no idea what's going on with him right now.

Baseball America has Elias as signed now as well, by the way.

Dunston was 50/50 a while back, so at the very least, we're trying to make this a GREAT class and that's really all we can ask. But, I'm definitely getting excited at the prospects of it becoming just that.......

If we sign Maples, Vogelbach, Dunston along with Baez, I will nut.

Maples is going to be good. I would prefer Maples to Vogelbach tbh..

Exciting to hear about Vogelbach rumored to be signed..

According to this link, Ricky Jacquez has not fared too well in the California Collegiate League:

6/11- 6.2IP 3H 5ER 4K/6BB 105 pitches

6/18- 5.1IP 8H 5R (4ER) 4K/4BB 97 pitches

6/24- 4.1IP 7H 6R (3ER) 4K/2BB 86 pitches

7/6- 2.2IP 2H 2ER 4K/1BB 54 pitches

I wonder what this will do for our chances of coming to an agreement with him.

That certainly doesn't inspire much motivation to spend very hard on him. There are plenty of other overslot/superslot draftees who would seem much more worthy of spending dollars than on him. If he's good for the $200K dollars, that's one thing. But that doesn't sound much like a guy you spend $500-750K for, if that's what he's expecting. A mostly low-90's fastball that doesn't have good movement or location, and a short dinky guy with limited projection, spend it elsewhere.

Thing is, he's got to decide too. That doesn't sound like the kind of pitching that's going to make him a weekend starter at Texas. A farm system has lots of teams and lots of innings to give to lots of pitchers, so you don't need to be pitching great to get a chance to pitch and work things out. But a premier program like Texas has what, two weekend starters? If he's smart, he might consider whether it might not be better to go pro and get innings, rather than go college and watch. But I don't know what I'm talking about, really, and even if I am being objective it's not as easy for a teenage kid to be objective about his chances. Sometimes you're used to being viewed as good, and the prospect that at Texas there are going to be at least a couple of guys who are both as talented, more advanced, more established, and much more likely to get the weekend starts might not register.

The problem is, we don't know what exactly the Cubs wanted to see out of him in that League. I can't remember the specifics, but I wouldn't be surprised if they asked him to scrap one of his pitches, throw more changeups, or something else along those lines. He could essentially be pitching outside of his comfort zone in order to show that he can be more than just a thrower. His production may only tell one side of the story.

Still, those aren't exactly encouraging numbers.

Neftali Rosario received a $150,000 bonus.

That's as slot or sub-slot as you can get for a teenager.

Interesting. That's possibly good news to me in one weird sense: I'd wondered how it was that Rosario's signing had been authorized and announced, and few of the others. If he was a standard overslot, and DeVoss, and they had both been approved, that might have implied that we hadn't signed anybody else. But if Rosario was announced only because he's sub-slot, then perhaps they've signed 6 other guys to over-slot but those just haven't been announced/approved yet.

Yeah, I'm shocked Rosario was signed for that amount. Cool to get someone in cheap, especially if it helps us out later on with some overslots.

By the way, we've got 18 signees so far. We usually wind up with around 30, so if that winds up as the magic number, here's my wish list for the final 12: Baez, Vogelbach, Zych, Scott, Gretzky, Schlect, Dunston, Maples, Shoulders, Jensen, Richardson, and Jacquez......Couple of notes from PSD's guy are we're 600,000 apart with Shoulders. As a guy who was picked where he was, we may be content with not trying too hard with him, especially with Vogelbach and Gretzky ahead of him in the Cubs' minds. On a more positive note though, supposedly we're making solid progress with Dunston.

Shoulders is kidding himself if he thinks he's getting anywhere near that kind of money. Also, I don't really see intrigue with Gretzky, at least not for the type of money he'd likely require.

Shoulders is a big kid with serious power, so it's conceivable he could work himself into a spot where he's at least capable of receiving somewhat close to that kind of cash. As far as Gretzky goes, I don't really disagree with you, he's one of the last guys I'd pick on this list probably, I just wanted to get us to 30 and I was naming them in draft order, not in order of my preference. I'd take Shoulders over him myself, with all things being equal.

Dugas is returning to school.

He was a guy I liked, but I never saw him as being more than a 4th OF. Good approach, good feel for the game, but his speed, power, and arm all left something to be desired.

Bit of a bummer he didn't sign, but I'm glad the Cubs didn't break the bank for him.

the 1 million will all be spent on black face to trick drunken cubs fans into thinking we signed prince fielder.

So that's the Cubs 2nd and 3rd rounders signed. We're getting there.

Here's some YouTube on these guys...

Zeke DeVoss

Vogelbach looks like one of those old timey players you sometimes see fast moving black and white clips of with ragtime music in the background.

Now that we have him, Im sure that we'll get Baez, so its time to work hard toward Dunston and Maples, and whatever else we get, we get.

1 mill over slot for a second rounder is pretty rare, is it not?

It happens more frequently than you'd think. Including Vogelbach, there will probably be between 5-7 second round selections from this year who will get a comparable, if not higher, bonus.

It's kinda hard for me to imagine it coming down to money for Gretzky, given who his parents are.

Either he wants to go pro now, or he doesn't. A few 100K seems unlikely to sway him.

His mom probably gambled all the family money away.

When will Vogelbach report?

October probably, for fall Instrux?

Seriously, Phil Rogers saying that he's heard rumors of Vogelbach signing is hardly proof that he really has. And for all we know, his report is simply a report that he first or second-hand heard that from Jim Callis, who heard it from who knows whom.

I'm not doubting that he'll be signed. I'm just questioning whether in fact they have reached an agreement. And if they have, at the high price that is vaguely rumored, selig likely won't authorize that until August. If Vogelbach gets authorized on Aug 15, there won't be enough Mesa season left for him to show up, get oriented, do his physicals, and actually get into any meaningful game action. He might show up for a couple of games, maybe.

But I sincerely think his Cub "career" will likely begin in the fall instructional stuff.

In the article, you can clearly tell Vogelbach hasn't signed yet.
