Is it still too early to be concerned? He has given up 8 HRs already and seems to run out of gas every time he hits the 5th inning. Injured?

Looking at his stats, it appears that it's the home run rate and BABIP which are doing him in.

08-10: 8.2 H/9, 0.9 HR/9, 7.5% HR/FB%, 3.3 BB/9, 8.2 K/9, 2.50 K/BB, 16% LD%, .296 BABIP

11: 10.4 H/9, 1.8 HR/9, 15.2% HR/FB%, 3.2 BB/9, 9.4 K/9, 2.89 K/BB, 18% LD%, .343 BABIP

So the K's are up and the walks are basically the same. He's giving up a couple more line drives but the BABIP has risen 50 points, and his home run rate has doubled. If the BABIP drops a bit and the balls stop flying out of the park, it seems like he should get back to pitching like he has the last couple years.

Not really, he was a product of Rothschild. Since Larry is no longer here he's now going back to what he was without Larry,

Its not like he just forgot everything Larry taught him.

I tend to think that coaches at this level are predominately responsible for making sure player's stick to their mechanics, are well prepared physically for their games, and mentally for the competition -- all things that would require his presence every day.

I also believe that coaches are a relatively small factor in players' successes and failures at this level, but anyway...

If good mechanics = more success than your reasoning is flawed and a coach can have quite an impact.

Only if the difference between Larry's mechanics coaching and Mark Riggans' mechanics coaching is particularly large -- which I wouldn't assume it is, which is really my point about the impact of coaches I guess.

???????????

I wasn't a math major, but 29K's in 30.2 innings seems like it's up from a 3 year period(as was mentioned) where he had 187 in 200.2, 172 in 200, and 208 in 215.1.

That's 8.5K/9 this year versus 8.3K/9 for the previous 3 seasons. The only thing calculated wrong was the K per 9 rate for THIS year, which is understandable since he posted that early in the morning before his last start was updated into his current stats.

Maybe you should look at what was written before coming down on others.

Ryan Dempster's striking out guys at a slightly lower rate this year. He has a higher K/9 because he's simply facing more batters - getting more chances to increase it - because of the extra homers, baserunners, etc. His K rate is down from about 22 percent to 20 percent this year. K/BF matters.
