joe cowley is a less offensive, less athletically talented version of rob dibble.

also:

[if] Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano can play as if they’re interested.

oh look, another white chicago "journalist" saying that the talented brown guys don't care.

The Sox have been gaining national attention??

I'm guessing Ozzie Guillen being a professional clown isn't quite the attention they're looking for. The White Sox will never own Chicago as long as the demographics break like they are now unless they go on a 3 or 4 pennant winning dynasty.

You can't claim it's a Sox town when even White Sox fans care about the team 2nd to the Cubs

lol, not a chance.

This is almost as crazy as the mad Russian saying he'd just convert Knicks fans to Net fans. No problem.

I like how he doesn't bring up radio and TV ratings, which are actually a much more important sign than actual stadium attendance:

Cubs TV: 9th in MLB (for a team that sucked all year)

Cubs Radio: 3rd in MLB (first 1/2 of season only)

Sox TV: 17th in MLB (for a team that was in in it until the last few weeks)

Sox Radio: 14th in MLB (first 1/2 of season only, less than 1/3rd of listeners as Cubs)

But, yeah, Joe, the Sox are Chicago's team and Cubs fans are only fans because they go to Wrigley to drink. Get bent, moron.

The Sox could win multiple titles and the Cubs could finish last for a decade and it still wouldn't be a Sox town. Quality has never been the determinant factor, obviously.

Though if things did shift, what would most Sox fans use to fill the void that their red headed stepchild angst filled?

Either way, articles like that are just instigation attempts.

I feel interest in the Cubs greatly declining over the last year, but I don't see the Sox even coming close to take over in popularity.

When Major League Baseball wanted to do another “Real World’’ version of a team last year, the Sox were choice No. 1 to be ‘‘The Club.’’ Why? Because nationally the Sox are the most interesting soap opera going in sports.

uhhhhhhh

Is that the same Joe Cowley that pitched a no-hitter for the White Sox in the 80's and walked like 7 guys in the process?

Different guy

hahaha i have thought for like 5 years that they were the same joe cowley - after all, cowley isn't a common last name and lots of ballplayers end up covering a team they played for after they retire.

side note, baseball player joe cowley was one of my favorite phillies of all time. here's his game log for the phillies in 1987:

april 11 vs cubs: 0.2 ip, 3 h, 7 r, 4 er, 4 bb, 0 k

april 16 vs mets: 1.0 ip, 4 h, 5 r, 5 er, 4 bb, 1 k

april 22 vs expos: 5.1 ip, 6 h, 5 r, 4 er, 3 bb, 3 k, 1 hr, 2 hbp

april 28 vs expos: 4.0 ip, 6 h, 6 r, 4 er, 4 bb, 1 k, 1 hr

may 3 vs reds: 0.2 ip, 2 h, 3 r, 3 er, 2 bb, 0 k

released. overall line: 11.2 ip, 21 h, 26 r, 20 er, 17 bb, 5 k, 2 hr, 2 hbp, 15.43 ERA, 3.26 WHIP

Sox fans have this weird online mobilization when it comes to this type of newspaper quiz. I really think they believe the results to be binding legally.

WSI does it. It's horribly strange.

If winning a World Series and the President of the United States cant make this a "Sox Town", nothing will.

Obama didn't even know a single player on the team. :-)

I don't understand the thought process of "if the White Sox win so many titles than it will be a Sox town" fans don't just switch teams. Sure you have bandwagon fans that will do so but people who are actual fans don't just leave their team and even if they did I would doubt that they would switch the other team in the city, especially when Cubs and Sox fans aren't exactly on friendly terms.

That and as other people have said, the popularity of the Cubs has nothing to do with winning. Considering the fact that they are popular and they never freaking win.
