That really does seem impossible. If you asked me that question I would've guessed Portis to be like 34.

He's really redefined the old adage of being aware of the wall that 29 yr old running backs hit. Since he started so young, he seemed to hit that wall earlier. Now I think people tend to look at running back life in terms of carries rather than age.

And, yeah, as I think about it, Roy Williams may be in the discussion, but Portis is the Babe Ruth of the category.

Hurd is gonna be a ST guy...chill out a little guys.

It's a roster spot that could have been used for an impact player on offense.

Haha...ok. I think with a 90 man training camp roster, we can manage to squeeze in a ST guy.

They don't dress 90 on game day.

But they do get to dress 46 now. With a likely shift in our use of TE and the possibility of only keeping/dressing 2 QB, there is plenty of room for one more WR on the team. It probably means Bennett gets shafted a bit, so the question becomes Bennett vs Williams, essentially.

It seems a bit backwards to me. Grab a guy like Sims-Walker first and then if you still have room to improve, get Williams. Why go after the question mark guy first?

I've read that there's still some concern out there about MSW's knee. Not sure if that's why the Bears went for Williams instead. We may never know.

Colon returning to Pittsburgh sucks.

Would have been happy with offseason if they added Colon and 1 more WR to go with Roy Williams.

It's not game day. It's training camp.

And that would be a shame. Bennett isn't fast but he runs good routes, is a good blocker and has good hands.

Didn't see this posted on here yet, from last night: http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/6814403/chicago-bears-interested-mike-sims-walker-source-says

I still think there's a chance we get MSW in addition to Williams. That's probably just wishful thinking though.

Finally read this article. So he's been damaged goods all along and that's who the Bears were targeting the most? Since he comes cheap and the Bears have plenty of guys on hand already, seems like it would be a safe move on their part to grab him.

By my calculations, the Bears still have a ton of money to spend.

That's the part that bothers me. They have a lot of money to use and seem disinclined to be aggressive or creative in using it to address glaring needs. They are asking way too much of Cutler and Forte based on how this roster is currently structured.

If Williams is handed the job over Bennett, sure. Bennett has good promise, but is still a large question mark. If he can beat out Williams, I think he will.

Taking away special teams players you probably have 20 roster spots available on offense to dress each weak. If you can use up only 10 with QB and OL (3/7 or 2/8) you have 10 skilled spots.

5-WR

2-RB

2-TE

1-RB/FB/TE

Now if you dress 3 QB and 8 OL, you probably can only keep 4 WR, so we may end up bitching that we didn't sign a Sims-Walker so that we could dress a 3rd QB, but we can start that when we get to it.

I'm not happy with just Williams and Hurd.

I'd love a MSW or Malcolm Floyd signing. I love what the Chargers do for Rivers in the sense that they give him huge targets to throw to with good skill sets. Cutler needs more weapons.

Sims-Walker isn't a question mark? His best season came two years ago when he caught 63 passes for 869 yards. The year before, his first year, he caught 16 passes for 217 yards. Last year, 43 catches for 562 yards.

Williams had 530 yards on six fewer catches last year and 596 yards on 5 fewer catches two years ago. If Williams is a question mark (and he is), then Sims-Walker really is.

I'd much rather see them grab Malcolm Floyd or Braylon Edwards than Sims-Walker. But there has been no real signs of the Bears wanting to spend big money at the position, which is truly mind boggling when one considers the amount of money available to spend, the amount and the levels of talent available at the WR position, and the gaping wound of a hole at that position. Add that to the fact the team should be in win now mode since the defense isn't getting any younger, and I can't fathom a single reason why they wouldn't designate a lot of their expendable cap money on guys for Cutler to throw to.

Just for reference, averaging it out, this is what the Bears dressed last year (had to calculate this myself based on GP, but it should be accurate... missing .0625 which must account for the rare occurance of a player dressing, but not playing any plays):

DB	9.25
DL	7
LB	5.625
OL	7
QB	2
RB	3
ST	3
TE	3.3125
WR	4.75

This year, you will get one extra spot, instead of the emergency QB spot. We have room for another WR still, if we decide to go that route.

I've been under the impression that the gameday roster is exactly the same except for the 3rd QB being active. So you still will have 43 non-QB's dressing on gameday.

Except that last year that 46th spot had to be an emergency QB. This year, if you choose to go with only 2 QB's, you can have that 46th spot be any position you want.

I'm under the impression that the 46th spot can be used for any position you like. Indianapolis has kept only 2 QBs for years. The Bears did two years ago, and likely would have this past season if not for Hanie's pre-season injury. And really, you can still keep a third QB, he just won't dress or be available to play on game day. Mybe I misunderstood the new rule though. It would seem silly for the NFL to say you get 46 roster spots and 3 must be used on QBs.

I was just questioning your assertion that Williams is a question mark and, apparently, Sims-Walker is not. I do agree that Floyd or Edwards would be much better options than either, unless Martz is confident he can "fix" Williams and get him back to his 2006 numbers.

Amidst all this cheerful news about the 2011 Chicago Bears, I just saw that Directv charged me the auto-renewal for Sunday Ticket.

Seriously thinking about cancelling.

It's good to have Adams back. I think they are pretty much set on the D-line. Need more depth at LB and I think the defense will be solid once again.
