i thought the DE's were pretty strong last year, izzy broke through as a starter opposite peppers. i think cutting alex brown turned out fine for them.

It turned out fine, but do we believe that they really knew what they had in Idonije or did the blind squirrel find a nut? I'd like to think they knew what they had, but I'm not that convinced. Peppers really took to Idonije, which is not something the coaching staff could possibly know would happen.

They obviously didn't know what they had since Mark Anderson sucked it up for half the season taking the majority of the snaps at the other DE.

It turned out fine for them in the end, but it still doesnt mean it wasnt a dumb decision to cut a productive Alex Brown in an uncapped year. There is no other likely reason why they cut him other than cost cutting.

Agreed. I was disappointed they didn't bring him back. But Idonije made it all better.

two Bears DL who are polar opposites in tackling prowess

Defensive Lineman and the Perfect Score

With the qualifying threshold of 75 attempts eliminating several players who have gone without a missed tackle in their few chances, only one perfect score remains in the study, belonging to the Bears’ Israel Idonije.

Idonije was the only player in the NFL over the past three seasons with more than 75 tackle attempts not to miss a single one.

One more performance worth noting, heaping yet more misery on the underachieving career thus far of Amobi Okoye – he was the poorest performing defensive lineman by some distance in the study, missing one in every 8.08 of his attempts over the past three seasons.

Hmm interesting. I'm curious though what an attempt is. There has to be some pretty subjective measurement there. Have to think a stat like this is a little like tracking errors in baseball. A player might never make an error, but if he is not even making a play on 10% of balls he should because of below average athleticism, errors don't tell the story of his defensive prowess. Some players are going to have attempts that other players couldn't dream of getting. And so they may miss some attempts, but are making a bigger impact, even if they are just slowing down a runner. Only if you could isolate similar attempts could it be completely conclusive.

i'm showing that anderson started game 1 and then didn't start again.

Yeah i have a hard time buying into those tackling #s. I mean Briggs 4th worst and Manning 2nd best, whatever. Manning may makes a tackle...when he can push someone out of bounds or its all jammed up in the middle, but that guy blows tackles by bad angles and not putting his hands on the guy to consider it an attempt. I sure wouldnt trust Manning in the open field. Briggs, well the dude is in all the action, of course guys are going to slip through. No way would i say Briggs is a poor tackler.

Yeah well you suck.

Regardless, I have no problem admitting that the move turned out ok, but my point was that they made the move to offset the cost of the Peppers move. I don't think they were expecting Izzy to necessarily have a career year. They were hoping Mark Anderson could have a monster year with the opponent focusing on stopping Peppers. They certainly could have afforded to keep Brown, they just didn't, and I've yet to hear a reason why except "they didn't want to spend the money on Peppers and Brown." It's not my money but if they can't even spend up to the projected salary cap in an uncapped year, it leaves me wondering why.

maybe they got it right? maybe they saw something that told them that alex brown was going to be less than his mediocre self, which would have been right. brown was even more allergic to the quarterback than normal last season.

i'm not going to complain about defensive end, they seemed to do okay with those decisions.

Biggs just tweeted some of what Martz said today about the offense, including praise for Garza, calling Williams elite and asking for more linemen.

Martz says that Roy Williams is “an elite player” who should get 70 or 80 catches this season.

The Smith/Angelo regime is gonna live and die by Mike Martz, aren't they?

So, just to make this clear, the Bears downgraded at the following positions:

Safety (Manning>Conte)

Linebacker (Pisa + Roach > Roach)

Tight End

Center

Punter (accuracy)

and have upgraded at:

Wide Receiver

Defensive Line (maybe)

Offensive Tackle (maybe)

Running Back (barely)

Punter (length)

And remained the same (basically) at: QB, kicker, guard, corners, special teams

Consider me unimpressed. The defense better get a ton of pressure on the QB or its going to be one hell of a long year. The Bears refuse to spend money on the offensive line or a CB, their two worst positions and have gotten worse at Safety, one of the most important positions in the Tampa 2.

I'd love to see them pick him up. The change of scenery might be all that's needed to ignite that fire inside.

Isn't he being cut because he's too much of a fat ass?

Yes, but worth the gamble if he's cheap. Profootball focus had his as the 12th ranked LT last year. That's a step up for the Bears.

Reunited with Tice. That could work.
