So far, then, the Bears have upgraded P and WR (whether or not Roy Williams is a top WR now, he's still better than Aromashodu/Davis), two of the weakest positions on the Bears last year, and traded a player that likely has a lot more perceived value than actual value. They also had the highest bid for the best available OL, their biggest need, but he took less money to return to the Steelers. And it's now day 1 of FA transactions.

That about cover it?

Lost a starting safety (though they have an in-house replacement), lost one of their better special teams players, and haven't yet come to terms with their starting center or their best special teamer. Still need to come to terms with their 1st round draft pick, and don't have a 3rd LB.

Not complaining or anything, just throwing out bits that you missed.

I wonder what the Bears know about Williams that no one else seems to. He hasn't a good year since 2007, IIRC.

Martz used him well previously, and Williams has a relationship with Daryl Drake, the WR coach, from their days at Texas.

Yeah, I know all that, but it doesn't mean he can still play. Come to think of it, other than 2006, he's been a very ordinary receiver overall.

As I understand it Martz value receivers who run their routes well because the offense is predicated on timing. Jump balls to tall guys aren't really part of the deal. Is Williams known for running his routes well?

Is it just me, or does it appear as though the Bears are trying to get worse?

It's not just you. Their stubborn refusal to acquire dynamic, impact players on offense is incredible. They need receivers and RB's. They very little depth and/or playmakers at either position.

Here's a short list of FA's who realistically could have been or could still be signed and would/could make an impact on offense:

- Darren Sproles

- Santana Moss

- Joe Addai

- Michael Bush

- Michael Floyd

- Lance Moore

- James Jones

- Mike Tolbert

Hurd is gonna be a ST guy...chill out a little guys.

How are we supposed to chill out when the Bears are obviously planning to use Sam Hurd as their #1 receiver?

Malcolm Floyd?

Santana Moss wasn't realistic...he was one of the first players to sign anywhere and went back to Washington.

Well they basically have 5 WR now: Williams, Knox, Hester, Bennett, Hurd.

We may not take a FB again, and probably 2/3 of our TE will be blocking TEs. Davis could get some time as a receiver, but will have a lesser impact than Olsen. And we could go back to carrying only 2 QBs.

So I don't think its out of the question we could bring in another WR as an impact player. Not saying they are planning to, but there is roster space for it. Hurd does't effect that possibility.

It's a roster spot that could have been used for an impact player on offense.

Haha...ok. I think with a 90 man training camp roster, we can manage to squeeze in a ST guy.

Olsen was a glorified 4th WR

Roy >>> Olsen as a "WR"

Sucks that we couldn't get Colon. That was probably a pretty solid kick to their nuts considering they had a significantly higher offer in.

I always thought Hurd was a guy that could break out and be a good WR. Actually figured he would break out (though not to the same extent) instead of Miles Austin in Dallas.

I have absolutely hated Roy Williams for the better part (basically the entirety) of his NFL career. That I now I have to enjoy his first down outbursts because he's a Bear now kind of sucks. If he was a 75+ catch receiver, it might lessen my hatred for the tooting of one's own horn. I even recall him being all proud of himself for one catch in a game last year where his team was down by more than 3 touchdowns.

His game hasn't been all that good since 2007 mainly because he seems to care more about celebration after catches rather than the catch itself. I wonder what the ratio is for time spent in practice actually catching balls and celebrating the catch of balls.

With my mini but lengthy rant now over, I hope Roy is only half of the improvement at receiver since they still need to now make up for the loss of Olsen. While Olsen wasn't the be all end all TE, he's much better than the current crop still on the roster.

Going into this offseason, Cutler needed more protection and more weapons. The protection is nearly the there. He still needs more weapons. I'd like to see one more decent lineman, one more impact receiver and a solid back up to Forte along with re-signing Forte.

That really does seem impossible. If you asked me that question I would've guessed Portis to be like 34.

Yeah this doesnt really seem like a Bears type acquisition at all. If they were going to go after a showboating WR, why not put an offer in for Ochocinco before the Pats got him?

It seems a bit backwards to me. Grab a guy like Sims-Walker first and then if you still have room to improve, get Williams. Why go after the question mark guy first?

They don't dress 90 on game day.
