Well if Wells and his albatross of a contract can be traded, maybe there is somebody out there to take Sorianos contract from the Cubs at some point.

Angels will get cash in the deal as well.

I should hope so.

6:47pm: The Jays might not be sending any money to Los Angeles in the trade, tweets Shi Davidi of The Canadian Press.

WHAT!

Even if Wells is an upgrade, the drop from Napoli to Mathis is huge. If Hank Conger doesn't bust out in a big way, I don't see how the Angels got any better.

The Angles missed on every free agent target in the off season so they are desperate? Thats my guess what "we are missing".

I would consider desperation a plausible explanation, yes.

In the shuffle:

Look for [the Jays] to plow some of that money into this year's Rule 4 draft, where they have seven picks in the first 80 (including the Angels' second-rounder), as well as into the major league roster next winter, since they have only about $14.5 million committed for 2012, not counting the $8 million option on Aaron Hill. They could become very good, very fast.

Only $14.5 million committed for next season? Not bad.

WAR past 5 years:

Soriano: 5.4 - 6.9 - 4.3 - 0.0 - 2.9 – average: 3.9

Wells: 5.7 - 1.5 - 1.5 - 0.0 - 4.0 – average: 2.5

Soriano is 2 years older, both players are signed through 2014 and Soriano is due $72 mil while Wells is due $86 mil.

If Wells can pull Rivera/Napoli, the Cubs ought to be able to get something decent for Soriano, I'd think.

scioscia has such a chubb for mathis' catching skills and hated napoli's glove, which is why they were way closer to splitting time then they should have been.

it's too bad that they couldn't have gotten wells in there with gary matthews jr and torii hunter to have an OF full of truly dumb contracts.

that's assuming there's another gm out there as dumb as the angels' gm.

i can't believe napoli's involved. the blue jays were probably willing to give him away for practically nothing, but the angels threw in someone who has value.

Yeah, desperation had to be a big key to this deal. Hendry needs to be on the lookout, though.

Yeah... until recently, when bitching to my friends about Koyie Hill getting so much damn playing time, I had always equated him with Scioscia's infatuation with Mathis. I hope the situation here doesn't turn out similarly.

My thinking is that if Hendry had detected the Angels level of desperation sooner, we could have perhaps made this deal happen. I know that the Rays had serious interest in Napoli, so maybe we could have pulled off a 3 way deal and hung on to Archer

Cubs would get

Garza

Prospects

Angels get

Soriano

Rays get

Napoli

Lee

Guyer

Soriano never would have approved a trade to the Angels. Why, Mike Scioscia might have determined his playing time based on performance!

Why would he subject himself to that when he has such a good gig with the Cubs?

yeah or he might do what he did with the mathis/napoli tandem and give a vastly inferior player like reggie willits way too much playing time over soriano.

This is such a god awful trade for the Angels. Even if Wells plays as well as he did last year, they're hands are still tied financially because of his contract. That the Blue Jays got something of value and didn't have to chip in any money makes this incredibly lopsided. Heck, who knows, maybe Juan Rivera goes back to hitting .280 with 25 homers and makes this trade even worse for the Angels.

What I like is hopefully the Wells contract will limit how high the Angels will go in the Fielder (and Pujols if he reaches FA) next offseason and it would be one less team for the Cubs to compete against.
