So the Jays GM is being quoted a ton on twitter about how he thinks they're out on Fielder because they won't go more than 5. That could and likely is just posturing but it could also mean someone else is offering 6-7. I can't think of anyone but the Cubs that would actually be doing that. Can the Mariners really go that high?

Mariners, Nationals.

Quick thought: if the Marlins do sign Pujols, they're out of the race for any significant pitchers. Seems like the Cubs could try to coerce them to overpay for Garza, assuming their system could.

Marlins system kind of sucks. A package from them would more likely start with Morrison. Not sure whether Nolasco makes sense for us, but I'm sure they'd try sending him. Personally, I think Z becomes much more of an option for them, if they do get Pujols. We'd eat most of the contract probably, he's buddies with Ozzie, and maybe they'd send us Matt Dominguez in return.

Dominguez + salary relief + no more Z

That would have to be a start because I think Z would get a little more than that, depending of course on how much salary gets eaten. Is Dominguez+Morrison enough to get Z and $10M?

The Cubs could pay all of Z's salary and they would get laughed at if they asked for Morrison. He may get dealt, but it'd be for a Gio Gonzalez or one of the other A's guys.

You value Morrison higher than Gio Gonzalez? I go completely the other way....I say they get laughed at if they approach the A's and ask for Gonzalez in exchange for Zambrano and cash.

JimBowdenESPNxm: Mariners are now front=runners on Fielder with Milw,Cubs & Tor all wanting shorter term deals....stay tuned

He means Morrison would be dealt for Geo.

jcrasnick: @bobbypricetag I don't think #Cubs are as long-shotty for Prince as the #BlueJays are, but they would also prefer to do shorter deal

Good, that means they are smarter than most of the other people on these boards.

For someone who despises "these boards" as much as you appear to, you certainly can't help yourself commenting on it all the time.

I wouldn't freak out over a Jim Bowden tweet.

It isn't any less likely than it was before.

Well damn. I guess 1b is going to get interesting.

It was a tweeted rumor about a possible front runner for Fielder. They didn't actually sign the guy yet, lol.

Plus we can still overwhelm with AAV on a shorter deal.

Quite curious as to the plan Theo and co have that doesn't include Pujols/Fielder

The Cubs have put offers for more AAV and less years out there. If Fielder and Pujols would rather more overall money for greater length, and there are teams out there willing to go that far, there's not a whole lot the Cubs can do about it except plan for other directions.

If it comes down to it, I can see the Cubs going 6 years. Maybe even 7. But I could also see the Mariners giving him the 8/200 he supposedly wants.
