If Pujols signs with Miami, how does the board feel about Gaby Sanchez? I'd prefer Fielder (by a wide margin), but Sanchez is intriguing. Looking at his MLB numbers, he's posted decent BB and K rates as a full-time player. His BAbip seems low considering his LD and IP percentages.

Depending on the price we could do far worse than Gaby Sanchez.

i wish the cubs were a big market team like the marlins so we could sign good players and then flip mediocrities like sanchez to the starving masses

If we do not sign one of these two, I have to admit, I will not be impressed with Theo's initial "doing it the right way schtick". We are not talking about fringe players here, we are talking about two of the very best sluggers in baseball that Tom Ricketts said he would go after should Theo and Jed want to.

I have full trust in him but watching the Marlins go after it this hard does not sit well with me when we happen to have a team that plays baseball in the city of Chicago in front of people who actually give a damn.

Not giving Albert 10 years is a sign of being prudent, imo.

If Pujols was offended by the AAV of $22 million that the Cards offered, the Marlins better be well "in excess of 200 million". I'm still holding out hope that we'll be able to snag him for ~$28/year on a shorter deal.

Fielder can be had for less years. As I said, one of the two is what I am looking for. Now if Pujols and Fielder come out and say: "I never had any interest in going to the Cubs", then I can live with that. But if its because we refused to make a serious run at them, then, well.

If we don't wind up with one of these two, I'll be disappointed. But, by no means will I question what Theo's doing. If he wants to build a different way, then I'm going sit patiently and watch how he does it instead.

Really? The Marlins gave out two ridiculous contracts to players that have basically no chance of playing up to them. Not sure throwing around big contracts with no recognizable analysis behind them is something to be upset at Theo for not doing.

IMO, Pujols going to a non-central team who likely won't win their division even with him is about the best thing that can happen for the Cubs.

So in other words...Epstein got a whole month to turn things around.

Posting here since Gaby Sanchez was being talked about here. Posting mostly for lol's.

keithlaw: Dude, they fired Hendry months ago. RT @TunaXL Gaby Sanchez for Matt Garza make sense if Albert signs with Marlins?

Pujols knows of the Marlins' fire sale ways, and that a 10-year contract screams 2 years, a World Series, and then summarily being dumped elsewhere to save money.

Well yeah, and the Marlins have to leave themselves a way out if the attendance isn't what they think it will be at the new park.

the alternative is that he makes 25 million dollars on a team with a budget of 40 million dollars that wins 65 games in 2015. although i suppose if he is afraid of a firesale, the ntc is really important just in that it will help him to maneuver himself to a team of his choosing (and continue getting paid more than anyone else is offering him).

The sad thing is that I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the Marlins tried to start the talks.

Wow. My guess is that it's going to be more of the agent approaching the Cardinals to counter and when they wisely pass, he'll be a Marlin by the weekend.

No and I said I trust him. I just feel we need to grab one of these two as we need a 1B and it certainly will not deter them ftom sticking to their plan.

Like I said, I trust Theo but the Marlins being this much of a player kinda sucks being that we are in Chicago.

You can't just decide that one or two players are must-haves. You can't stop one crazy team from overpaying what a player is worth to you.

This is exactly what I was hoping for. I sincerely hope that the Cubs, Marlins, RSox, Yanks drive up the price and he ends up sticking with the Cards but killing their payroll flexibility.

Why would the same statement not apply?
