I can't remember where I saw it but Nate Silver did a comparative analysis of Fielder and Mo Vaughn. The graph pretty much showed that he expects a Vaughn like collapse for Prince by 32.

Edit: here it is. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6884431/the-road-map-cubs-resurgence

Even when Mo was in his early 30s, he was OPSng in the 800s and hitting near 30 HR. I'll definitely take that in the final years of a 6-7 year contract.

in that offensive environment it wasn't all that impressive - 119 ops+ at age 31 and 115 ops+ at age 32. i sure as hell don't want to be paying a lousy defensive 1b $20m a year to put up lyle overbay-type production.

If he he can be an elite heart of the order hitter for the first 4-5 years, and help us to a championship or 2, I'll take it. That's the risk you're going to take when giving a guy that long of a contract.

he's age 30 in year 3. year 4-5 he'd be at the age when mo vaughn started to not be an impact player. years 6-7 would probably be worthless following that trend.

So which argument do the meatballs glom onto, that Prince is too fat to sign or that Pujols is too old? I say both, and then they still throw a tantrum when the Cubs don't sign either. Meatballin' it up goooooood! Edited by Sammy Sofa

I'm very impressed with the sample size of 2 fat black first basemen.

What's the difference? They're both fat. They're both black. What else could make them different from each other?

I rotfl'd. I'm still chuckling a little actually. Just chortled, then I guffawed.

Can we have a blanket ban on the "If he helps us win a championship, I'll take it," argument. You could justify any move, anytime, anywhere, for any amount of money, with "if it wins us a championship...".

I'm in favor of banning this... if it help us win a championship

Cards' preseason offer to Pujols was reportedly 9 years, $195 million.

Hard to imagine making an offer that low they'll be able to come back and make an offer close to $100 million higher in total value a few months later. It's still hard to imagine, but it's just looking more and more like he's going to hit the market.

I would've pissed in John Mozeliak's face if I were Albert Pujols. He's going to wind up with career numbers that are going to be better than Musial, the consensus "Greatest Cardinal Ever", and they want to offer him $5 million more than what he's making now when he's been worth an absurd amount more than that?

He gave them their discount. Pay the man what he's owed, he'll be the face of your franchise for the next 50 years and you don't want this man to play for your team because he costs too much?

That's okay, we'll take him (I would hope)

pujols' numbers in the second half: .313/.381/.626/1.006

overall he has a .916 OPS, and that's with a babip (.267) that's 45 points below his career babip.

i'd still take him over prince, easily. hopefully the cardinals [expletive] up and let him get away.

Since this is like the 2012 Cubs 1B thread...from the Trib:

Pena has 26 home runs and 72 RBIs, but his .227 batting average has many wondering why the Cubs are inclined to bring him back. Ryan Dempster, who left with the bases loaded and a 3-1 lead only to get no decision, provided some clues.

"He has a crazy amount of picks," he said, referring to Pena scooping up wild throws from infielders and pitchers. "He has been unbelievable. It's not just what he does with the bat. He makes huge contributions, and he's a great teammate. There's not a bad word to say about him."

Pena has been saying for months he wants to return. He's a favorite of the Ricketts family for his character and positive attitude about the team's direction.

Didnt Pena say something when he was first signed along the lines of seeing himself as the Cubs 1B beyond this year, and he was pretty much lauged off back when we were pretty much sure that Fielder or Pujols were in the cards? Then again, Carlos Silva was pretty much sure that the 4th spot in the rotation was his and Wells and Cashner were battling it out for the 5th.

I can't stress this enough. I like Pena. He's an all around good baseball player. However, If the Cubs were to re sign Pena, by the time the team is able to compete again, his contract will have been at least 2 years expired.

If we couldn't get Fielder or Pujols my plan C would be Dunn, although the infield defense of Ramirez, Castro, and Dunn would be more than enough to put fans and pitchers alike into fits. May as well just put Soriano at 2nd at that point.

The only way I could see us having a competive team with Carlos Pena back at 1st is if we were to sign CJ Wilson and pull off some kind of miracle trade with the Dodgers for Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, and maybe Chad Billingsly.

Well they could go after Reyes and/or CC if they went with Pena. It wouldnt be easy, but neither with the 1B anyway, and at least there are other franchise player type options through FA. I'm not as into the idea as I am of signing the 1B, but t could work out if executed.

Then yeah there's the trade avenue too, which I think they'll be active on anyway.

I'm not a fan of the Dunn idea either. He's not finished but he's not the type I'd expect to age well.

I totally agree on no to Dunn. The few things I've read say he has lost bat speed and may not rebound.
