The latest I have heard (from someon who swears he has a source in the AD) is that Wilcox is definitely gone, though he didn't say whether or not it was definitely to Texas. Rumors of a contentious coaches meeting today, in which a certain defensive coach had to be restrained from beating his tail. The educated guess is that if this story is true at all, the coach was Chuck Smith.

I don't know if this is true, but it would fit with what I heard from someone else earlier this morning.

That's crazy, if true. It's unfortunate, too, because I think Wilcox is a really good DC. I figure Lance Thompson will be promoted at this point, unless Dooley goes after Randy Shannon or something.

Maryland has a 3 p.m. press conference scheduled for today. It could be their announcement that Friedgen is out and Leach is in.

If so, very good hire by them.

He's being fired but will coach in the bowl game, apparently.

Yeah, basically they told him not to come back next year it sounds like. I don't know if that'll keep them from announcing Leach today or not, but all the rumors point to Leach being their next coach.

Isn't Wanny doing the same in Pittsburgh?

Wannstedt technically resigned, though, and is staying with the athletic department. Maryland wanted Friedgen to resign, but he wouldn't.

Maryland is evidently interviewing Malzahn....If Gus is offered the job, I think he has to take this one (after coaching the national championship game). Hopefully, Maryland chooses Leach.

If those are the two options Maryland is in a nice position either way.

he's an incontinent old man, he can only remember a few plays in the 60's and something about john capaletti.

that may be true, but even he knew last week that the bears were going to win the nfc north.

They apparently interviewed June Jones as well. I expect SMU would pony up the money to keep Jones there, but if he's interested, he'd be my number one choice without a doubt.

I'd take Leach over Malzahn, though. Both great offensive minds, but Leach has a track record as a successful head coach while Malzahn does not. Of course, Leach is more than a little crazy and Malzahn is not, so there's that to consider.

I'd almost rather AU keep Malzahn as their head coach and buy out Chizik. As others have mentioned though, Malzahn isn't a proven commodity as a head coach, CEO type. Chizik has proven he can hire quality assistants, and this an important piece of the puzzle. Chiz is also a very quality defensive mind. If Malzahn were to leave, Curtis Luper (AU's current RB coach) could potentially be promoted to OC and continue to run Malzahn's system at AU. If I had to guess, I'd say Maryland chooses Leach though.

I've heard Maryland is a pretty business-like administration that may not mesh well with Leach's laid back, quirky personality. Malzahn or Jones may mesh better with administration and that may be why it's taking so long to finalize something.

Sportsradio 1310 in Dallas is saying June Jones turned down Maryland and is staying at SMU.

Probably with a pretty hefty raise.

After watching Pony Excess on espn, you know they have some money. He's done a great job in a short period of time too.

Yeah, he was already one of the highest paid non-AQ coaches in the NCAA before the Maryland flirtation. SMU boosters have got some money.

And the Pony Excess 30 for 30 was awesome, by the way.

Dew have you heard anything with Wilcox?

Not a thing. There hasn't been anything said about the opening since the rumors first started. I'm not a member of the UT Rivals board, though, and that seems to be where TheVolCub gets his info from, so he may know something I don't.

Wilcox was made available to the media a few days ago, but gave the standard line that he's received no offers and is happy in Knoxville.

I haven't watched that many of the 30 by 30, but that was the best one that I have seen. The replacement players standing next to the other team was funny just to look at from a size difference.

The Texas boards seem to think he is still the front runner, but at this point I have zero clue. He's not exactly the splash hire, but fits the mold of the young firey DC that Brown wants. I think the splash hire for Texas will come from the OC.
