I can't believe Michigan hasn't made a move one way or the other by now. Waiting until after the bowl seems like complete lunacy unless they have some sort of back-channel communication going on with an NFL assistant...which I suppose is far from out of the question.

why is it assumed that Rich-Rod is out? If he wins the bowl game, that's 8 wins. I'd have thought that would buy him another year

If I were Michigan, he'd get another year if he fired Robinson with the understanding that he'd better win 9 or 10 games in 2011.

I think it's Harbaugh or nothing for Michigan.

Harbaugh doesn't have to and might not wait on Michigan. His stock won't be higher than it is now.

I have believed all along that Dan Mullen will land at Miami and Gus Malzahn will take the HC job at Mississippi State, and heard a top sportstalk show in the state of Alabama suggesting that same thing today.

i don't really understand firing rich rodriguez. carr left the cupboard pretty bare last season and they certainly weren't the type of players who fit rodriguez' system. this year he was able to install his offense with his type of quarterback and they were very prolific. the defense is a joke but as long as they recruit better players on D, you'd have to think they'll improve.

hiring a guy who runs a completely different system than the coach before him and then firing him after two years is just silly.

This was RichRod's 3rd year at Michigan

was it really? man i am really losing it lately. apparently i forgot all of last year, including michigan football and bobby bowden being forced into retirement.

in addition to it being Rich Rod's 3rd season, the cupboard was most definitely not bare. Rich Rod scared all the players away - including Mallet. The 06 and 07 classes were rated 12 and 13 by Rivals. And there was good groundwork for the class signed a couple months after Rodriguez was hired (#10 by Rivals). Rankings aren't everything, but there were quality players there on both sides of the ball, a really good QB and some play makers on D. The players didn't fit his system and they left in flocks that first spring, but he came into some talent. A heck of a lot more talent than he's going to leave for the next guy.

right but a lot of the guys that were recruited by carr were not his type of player. i guess i shouldn't have said that the cupboard was bare, but when you change from a three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense to a spread option offense. mallett was the type of player who would be a disaster in rich rod's system, that's why he transferred. i think when you hire a coach with a radically different philosophy than the coaching staff that preceded him, you need to give him more time.

if you look at his success at wvu, the program really hit its stride after he had been there for 4 years. obviously there's the risk that michigan keeps him on another couple of years and the program remains subpar, but he added two wins each of the last two years, and personally i wouldn't chase him off for another regime change just yet.

As an ND fan, I'd love to have Rich Rod stick around for a couple more seasons. Get more spread offense players in and go through yet another defensive overhaul before you dump him, bring in a true "Michigan Man" and go through the process again.

Living up here, you hear a lot about Carr leaving the cupboard bare, so I just wanted to jump in on that point. I don't care one way or another about Carr, but Rich Rod's failures are not Carr's fault.

Whether the program is moving in the right direction or not - I don't know. Losing to App St a couple years ago is tough to explain. It's year 3 and the defensive backfield is in shambles and the whole defense isn't good. I don't know what all happened though I know a couple of guys Rich Rod signed couldn't make NCAA grades for admittance. But Rich Rod's actions and his "why me" attitude toward the press (not to mention the Josh Groban thing) is pretty embarrassing to the school. That with the results and the poor recruiting is probably enough to shut it down if there is a decent or better option out there.

Why would you want that? Kelly may never figure out how to stop that offense.

? You mean Diaco?

ND lost on a last minute drive after playing half the game without its starting QB. Maybe the game is different if Crist isn't out after the first drive and his backups throw picks (including 1 on the first play Crist was out). September Tommy Rees wasn't nearly the same as November Tommy Rees, who still had some "freshman with limited ability though a good football IQ" issues. ND's defense was significantly better in November than in September as well. I'm looking forward to seeing Michigan again next year.

This scenario makes sense to me as well.

ND wins if Nate Montana never steps onto the field, but that's a separate issue. They still could have won if Robinson didn't go 72 yards for the game winning TD and finish the game with over 500 total yards. West Virginia used to to the same thing to Kelly's Cincinnati's team.

there is seriously no fan base who pulls the "well, our starting ___ was hurt," "we were down to our 3rd string ____," "oh [some fluke play] cost us the game," "our program murdered _____ right before that game," than stupid ND fans. unbearable.

I have no interest in getting in this argument, but here's a very good look at why Mich's defense has been so atrocious the past few years.

Decimated Defense Part 1

Decimated Defense Part 2

Also, Carr's last recruiting class was highly rated because of two 5-star players (Mallett, D Warren), both of whom aren't with the team anymore. ESPN's analysis of the 2007 class points out that Michigan needed some CB in that class, but none were recruited.

And it seems like a lot of important Michigan people hate Rich Rod.

Thats part of the problem too. Right now he doesn't even have a top 25 recruiting class. What he has done on offense right now works, but he is still not pulling any big names. On defense he is struggling too, and a couple of his 13 commits right now are wavering including his top recruit Demetruis Hart at RB. The best player from the state is going to Tennessee, so the recruiting efforts need to improve all the way around.
